Next PaperWorks Meeting

Thursday, April 14, 10 AM to noon
St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church
4440 N. Campbell Avenue, Tucson
NE corner of Campbell and River roads

Program

Join us April 14, to hear Novie Trump, an Arizona based sculptor and installation artist working in ceramic, mixed media and sound. Novie was formally trained in classical archaeology. She is interested in work that explores the unknown, both literal and figurative. Secrets are an integral part of her work: the unopened box, the unbroken egg, the lost ritual, the illegible word, the empty cocoon. Her website is www.novietrump.com

Card-Making for Hospice patients

Please join us immediately after the April meeting to make cards for hospice patients. We'll have art supplies and light refreshments. You're welcome to bring your own favorite materials.
Perhaps you're already planning to attend the discussion group for new members, or another one of the salons...no problem! We'll start early and stay late to give everyone who is interested a chance to make at least one card.  Details:
The cards are left blank, without a greeting, and unsigned, to give the patients a chance to write in whatever they would like. It's fine to write "PaperWorks 2016" in a corner on the back of the card, and you may include your initials if you wish. Please be sure to leave a blank panel for the patients to write in.  We can supply envelopes.
The Card Project will also collect any handmade cards you'd care to donate. Look for the red mailbox on one of the display tables.

Everyone welcome! Questions? Please contact Merrill Evans at [email protected]

Bobbie's Notes

Woosh! Another creative, busy, action packed month of PaperWorks activity is flying by! The free letterpress demo with Crane Giamo was hands on and "oh so fun!" Later that day was a reception at the UA Poetry Center, where Crane's work was on display and we listened to this innovative book artist. Such a treat!   And Julie Leonard's 3-day workshop was inspiring and wonderful. She is a great teacher, and we loved seeing her body of work and learning from this renowned artist. Added to the creative mix are Creative Circles, where we share ideas and inspiration.

The board is starting to plan for next year and we need your feedback.   Workshops committee is looking for a few nationally known artists to bring to Tucson.   And we are preparing for next year's PaperPlay classes, taught by master artist members of PW, so here's a call-out to PaperWorks artists: Do you have something you would like to teach? Book-binding, printing, photography, paper arts, special techniques, collage, journaling? You can submit proposals to [email protected] by Sept. 15 for a committee review.

HOSPICE CARD PROJECT AND SUMMER POST CARDS
We are launching two separate opportunities for card making this month, and our goal is to make sure you don't get confused! So here's the quick summary:

1. Hospice greeting cards
PW members are invited to donate handmade greeting cards to give to hospice patients over the summer, when many hospice volunteers are out of town. Each patient receives two unsigned cards (one to keep and one to give away; they don't need to match). At spring PaperWorks meetings, we'll have a red mailbox out to collect cards made at home. Right after the April and May meetings, The Card Project will offer free card-making salons (April 14 and May 12), with light refreshments and art supplies provided. Questions? Contact Merrill Evans [email protected]

2. Members' summer postcard exchange
Our annual member-to-member post card exchange takes place over the summer and is a great way for new members to get involved at home or on the road, while PW meetings and activities are sparse. We oldtimers look forward to the monthly creative postcard exchanges all summer long. Check the details in the left column April Meeting Extras box. Sign up at the April meeting. No experience required - just great summer fun!

After-meeting Salons and Creative Circles
The East Gallery of St. Philips is rented from 9am to 1pm on PW meeting days, (second Thurs., Sept. through May).   We have also reserved the room from until 3pm for the use of PaperWorks members, but you must contact Bobbie Wilson [email protected] by the Monday ( April 11) before the meeting ( April 14) if your group wishes to use the space. This is a great opportunity for Creative Circle members to gather, to hold a free salon, or to meet with other members. What ideas do you have for the space?

"A Stitch in Time" projects are displayed on the Creative Circles table at this month's meeting. They describe themselves as "loosely stitched" and they welcome anyone doing anything! Find out what inspires these artists and how to make their projects. For sure they do have fun!
