April is Stress Awareness Month, and while we are eager for you to read this week's e-Pulse, we don't want to put any pressure on you. So when do you think you're going to read it?
College Hometown Pharmacy Opens its Doors
History was made on March 30 when ACPHS held the grand opening for "College Hometown Pharmacy" - the first student operated pharmacy in New York State and one of only a handful of such pharmacies nationwide. ACPHS President Greg Dewey said, "College Hometown Pharmacy is a win-win opportunity for everyone. We are not only excited to provide a great service to a medically underserved community, but also give our students practical experiences wrestling with real-world problems." The pharmacy is located in the Hometown Health Centers clinic located at 1044 State Street in Schenectady. A second student operated pharmacy (College Parkside Pharmacy) is scheduled to open in Albany in late summer/early fall. Click the following link to view pictures from the Grand Opening event.
Vermont Students Participate in Pharmacy Advancement Week
The ACPHS Vermont Campus joined several pharmacy schools in New England this past week for Pharmacy Advancement Week. The program, which was led by the Student Society of Health-system Pharmacists (SSHP), was inspired by the national organization's Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI). PAI aspires to transform how pharmacists care for patients, including the establishment of pharmacists as health care providers. On Monday, each of the schools participating in Pharmacy Advancement Week posted boards in high traffic locations that read "I support provider status because ..." Students were then invited to fill in the blank (one response said "because 12 out of 14 Vermont counties are medically underserved"). Other events included hosting guest speakers Wesley McMillian and Jeffrey Schnoor  (pictured here with students) from the University of Vermont Medical Center to discuss the latest legislative developments regarding provider status.
College Considering Changes in Response to Medical Marijuana
With the recent launch of New York State's Medical Marijuana Program, the College has begun exploring how best to prepare Pharm.D. students for the realities of the new law. Administrators and faculty are still hashing out details of a plan, but one of the recommendations being advocated for is the inclusion of "joint rolling" in Pharmacy Skills Lab IV. Proponents of the controversial idea argue that it is the only way to adequately prepare students for the expected addition of this skill to the Part III Section of the state's board exam. A faculty member involved in the discussions said, "I'm going to be blunt. We are having difficulty reaching a consensus on the proper steps to take as a College. There are a number of proposals we still need to weed through before any decisions can be made." A town hall meeting has been scheduled for April 20 to share updates and answer questions. Brownies and Gummy Bears will be served.
Symposium Highlights Innovative Teaching Practices
The College held an Instructional Design Symposium last week to showcase the innovative approaches to teaching that are being used by ACPHS faculty. Presenters at the Symposium shared their experiences in a range of teaching environments and highlighted strategies that included flipped classrooms, online teaching, and the use of media (e.g., video, games, and animation). The goal of the Symposium was to provide faculty with opportunities to share their work and experiences with colleagues as part of continuing efforts to leverage the latest insights in the areas of teaching and learning. Content from the day's oral and poster presentations is now available online for any one who would like to learn more.
Panthers Sweep First Ever Home Track and Field Meet
The ACPHS men's and women's track and field teams swept Bard College in the school's first ever home meet held this past Wednesday at the nearby Albany Academies. The men defeated Bard by a score of 61-39; the women won 94-58. Winners on the men's side included Christopher Hunter (400m), Dean Ostrofsky (1500m), Zachary Clarkson (100m), Kyle Guiffre (shot put), Quinn Kelly (long jump, 200m), and William Harrison (discus). Winners on the women's side included Jessica Monzyk (3000m), Nicole Kulakowski (400m), Meghan Hagerty (pole vault), Geralyn Swald (100m and 400m hurdles), Shannon McCormick (triple jump, high jump), Dannie Griffin (200m), and Rebecca Foote (shot put). The teams will be in action again on Saturday, April 2 in the Union Invitational at Union College.
Fine Print
According to WebMD, one of the best stress relievers is a good belly laugh. It doesn't just lighten the load mentally, it lowers cortisol, your body's stress hormone. Something to keep in mind this month (and particularly today).
