EM Update | Vol. 8, Issue 6 | March 31, 2016

Workers from Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth lower the last converter removed from the cell floor of Building X-326 at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. All process gas equipment components have been removed from the building.

EM is preparing old uranium enrichment facilities in Ohio and Kentucky for eventual demolition,  Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) officials said here earlier this month.
They provided an update on deactivation work underway at the Portsmouth and Paducah  gaseous diffusion plants during a panel session at the annual  Waste Management Conference .
At the Portsmouth plant in Ohio, EM expects to have Building X-326, one of the site's three former process buildings, in a "cold and dark" and "criticality incredible" state by September 2017, according to PPPO Portsmouth Site Lead Joel Bradburne. "We're keeping our shoulder to it," he said.
EM and Fluor-BWXT Portsmouth, the site's Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D) contractor, are scheduled to finish removing old process equipment from X-326 by June 2016, Bradburne said. Deactivation activities are also underway at Buildings X-330 and X-333, the site's other two former process buildings. "We picked the hardest one first," he said.
EM is applying lessons learned from the successful D&D work underway at the Oak Ridge, Tennessee site to work being done at the Portsmouth site, according to Bradburne. Those lessons include the need to maintain the structural integrity of roofs and critical systems; use of enhanced chemical treatment on process gas systems to reduce highly enriched uranium holdup material; development of quality criteria for the non-destructive assay process to ensure the quality of data used for criticality incredible determinations; and creation of a characterization database for process component and deactivation data.

Centrus Signs Contract for
American Centrifuge Work in Tennessee

Centrus Energy Corp. (NYSE MKT: LEU) announced today that it has signed a new U.S. Centrifuge Technology Advancement contract with UT-Battelle, LLC, as operator of the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Under the terms of the agreement, Centrus will continue to perform engineering and testing work to preserve and advance U.S.-origin uranium enrichment technology to support future national security and energy security needs. The contract totals approximately $32.3 million and runs through September 30, 2016.

"We still have critical work to do to advance the nation's uranium enrichment capability," said Steve Penrod, vice president of American Centrifuge for Centrus. "In Oak Ridge, we have a specialized workforce, unique assets, and technical capabilities that are essential for this important work. Over the long-term, we plan to continue advancing our technological expertise in uranium enrichment technology, operations, and manufacturing so that we are ready to deploy a commercial-scale enrichment facility when sufficient market demand recovers."

Centrus recently completed a successful three-year demonstration of the existing American Centrifuge technology at its facility in Piketon, Ohio, with 120 machines linked together in a cascade to simulate industrial operating conditions. Informed by data from that demonstration, Centrus scientists, engineers, and operators will utilize the Company's unique facilities in Tennessee to continue advancing the technology - identifying further improvements to reduce costs, improve manufacturability, and enhance long-term reliability of its enrichment operations. The work also ensures that critical U.S. expertise in centrifuge design, manufacturing, and operations is maintained.

In October 2015, the U.S. Department of Energy issued a report to Congress finding that the United States must restore its domestic uranium enrichment capability to meet national security needs. After evaluating a range of possible technologies, the Department found that the American Centrifuge is the "most technically advanced and lowest risk option" for doing so.

SUMMER ARRIVES with
JIMMY BUFFETT PARTY
and PARROTS of the CARIBBEAN
Saturday, June 4

Sugarloaf Mountain will get tropical as Southern Ohioans dig out their island-wear, dust off their leis and grab their shades to party with the number one Jimmy Buffett tribute act in the country, the Parrots of the Caribbean! Summer will officially arrive in Chillicothe with Parrots of the Caribbean on Saturday, June 4 for a 7:00 pm concert. The POTC band performs a high-energy, original stage show featuring a "Salute to Jimmy Buffett". These seasoned professionals perform Buffett's biggest songs, their own original Cajun country-rock hits, along with wild and crazy and sometimes outrageous stage show antics. The band has delighted audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada for over a decade. In 2012 they performed for our Troops in Okinawa Japan.

The five musicians who make up the Parrots of the Caribbean exemplify a wide variety of talent. Dave Albrecht, lead singer began his career impersonating "Elwood Blues," the Dan Akroyd character for a Blues Brothers Band. After traveling with it for five years he joined "Legends in Concert" a top-ranked show of impersonators in Las Vegas. He eventually transitioned to his Jimmy Buffett act gathering the finest seasoned musicians. Jeff "Hawaiian Hillbilly" Cline on lead and rhythm guitar and backup vocals is as diverse in his styles of music as his heritage. With his Polynesian mother and Air Force father he grew up in three states and German. On keyboard, Kenny "Tips" Rice, called "The Professor" brings more than 40 years of professional musical performance. A classically trained pianist, Rice has transitioned to all musical genres and an assortment of groups. He has opened for such artists as Edgar Winter, Cheap Trick, Eddie Money, George Carlin, Michael Bolton and Willie Nelson. Greg Martin on percussion and vocals has been performing for nearly 40 years across the country and abroad. Gary "Riptide" Rigmaiden on bass and back-up vocals hails from the Golf Coast of Louisiana and spent part of his youth in Spain and Brazil. For him the island music, songs of the sea, bayou themes and beachcomber blues of Jimmy Buffet's music are right at home.

"A Parrots of the Caribbean concert is one of the most fun nights you can have anywhere doing anything.   We'll have margaritas, cheeseburgers, beach balls and expect everyone to dress appropriately with tasteless Hawaiian shirts and flip flops.  Let's celebrate the arrival of summer together!" Said Scioto Society CEO, Brandon Smith.

Tickets are $20 for reserved seating in advance and $25 day of show.  Concerts are rain or shine events and all sales are final. There will be no opening act.
