Major Primer Changes for 40K Due to GW's New Competitive Format
Squats

After reading this article, make SURE you click the updated Primer link below.

With GW suddenly exploding onto the tournament scene with their announcement of redoing their ever popular Games Day events around the country and opening another Warhammer World in Memphis, we at the NOVA Open are surprised and excited! We're EXTREMELY happy that GW is rejoining the tournament scene, but this might not automatically fix the problems with the game currently. Their new Official Tournament Army Construction guidelines are interesting, however, restoring the original FOC and limiting Tournament Armies to just a single Combined Arms Detachment and no Formations.

We at NOVA welcome change to the game, but are always careful with how we implement new changes. We'll be cautious about fully implementing the GW Competitive Tournament Guidelines for NOVA. One thing that concerns the Executive Board, Leads, and FAQ Council is GW reducing the points of competitive games to 1000 with no Super Heavy or Gargantuan Creature restrictions. While the community has been pushing for smaller games, 1000 points is a bit on the small side. We'll be discussing with the community about how we'd like to handle that.

Another interesting prospect of GW's Competitive Army Construction Guidelines is the requirement for 50% of your force to be Troops. We here at The NOVA actually really love this idea and jumped on board 100%. We'll be moving to 50% minimum Troops immediately!

With that said, we're very excited to see what GW throws at us! We'd like to hear all feedback on how you'd like us to handle it as well. And over the coming months we'll try and figure out how to handle it for this year's NOVA Open. Go see more details in our Primer right now!

30K Event Space Expansion
Registration Update

Swag Bags Running Out
Remember - only the SuperNOVAs and first 400 Convention Access Pass (CAP) registrants are guaranteed to receive one of NOVA Open's epic swag bags. Each bag typically includes tons of cool items, discounts at our vendors, and more. Last year's even included top tier brushes, cool scenic bases, and more.

We're down to only about 60 CAPs left that include Swag Bags. So, if you want to guarantee yourself one, make sure to go and snag your CAP today!

30K Event Space Expansion
Though it's only NOVA's first year hosting Horus Heresy events, a couple already sold out and the rest seem headed in that direction. As a result, we've done our best to expand, and will be enacting changes to 30K event sizes shortly (once we've given those on the wait lists a chance to snag their spots). The Asymmetrical and Escalation events will be expanded, for now, from 24 to 36 spots each. Grab them while they're hot! Expanding the Asymmetrical event only added a handful of spots, once the wait list was accounted for. These are some hot ticket events for 2016!

Registration Update
The following events are a couple of the ones down to less than half their space remaining -
 - 30K Escalation, 30k Asymmetrical Campaign; 30K Big Blam
 - TNA - The Art of Painting Hot Chicks (both classes); Painting Sheer Fabric
 - X-Wing Championship; X-Wing Narrative (both sides); X-Wing Hunger Games (both events)
 - Armada Championship
 - 40K Trios Team Tournament
 - Malifaux Narrative, National Championship, Treacherous Ties, and Enforcer Brawl
 - Age of Sigmar Tournament

With over 500 individuals already registered for NOVA this year, we're crushing past records; don't miss out!
Wave 9 Changes Affect X-Wing Primer

Rey Skywalker
The contents of Wave 9 have been the source of much speculation for the last few months. X-Wing players  from all over the world will be fielding new ships from "The Force Awakens." These ships include the Upsilon-class Command Shuttle, the TIE/sf, and the much requested upgrade for the YT-1300 which includes Rey Skywalker as a pilot.

NOVA Open will be the first major tournament where this meta shift will be tested. Wave 9 is expected to be released this summer.

With this announcement of Wave 9, the NOVA Open X-wing leads have updated the primer.

Silmarillion House Rules Allowed in Lord of the Rings GT

Our Lord of the Rings leads have always wanted to know what it would be like to introduce Morgoth and Ancalagon to the Lord of the Rings. Now we will find out!

All the heroes and villains of Tolkien's beloved story are now available for play and their rules are on Games Workshop's website!

Although some of the rules for these models will create some questions about balance (Ancalagon can breathe fire with a 24" area of effect, Strength 10, Instant Death blast), feel assured that this event will still be fun as we celebrate Tolkien lore with the 6 foot, highly detailed statues that represent these amazing miniatures!

NOVA Open Unveils New Primer for Age of Sigmar Points System

All - make sure you cick the link to the updated Age of Sigmar at the end of this article for more information.

Age of Sigmar Points System
Age of Sigmar
We are proud to unveil the new Age of Sigmar primer, based upon GW's newly released Age of Sigmar Points System.

After receiving numerous requests from Age of Sigmar players, the NOVA Open has decided to replace the Clash Comp's pool system for the competitive play tournament with a new system for creating army lists for this event. The new primer does not apply to narrative events, which will continue to use  scrollbuilder.com to create army lists.

How does this work?
The primer uses a variation of other unofficial systems used for Age of Sigmar competitive play. Broadly, a list with 30 counted wounds allows players to choose six warscrolls, 10 wounds of models with the "hero" keyword, eight wounds of models with the "monster" keyword, and eight wounds of models with the "warmachine" keyword. All models with 15 or more wounds must come from the same compendium. All named heroes are one to two choices and can only be used once.

Painting Penalty
While we will not establish painting rules for most factions, we will impose a two-wound penalty for every unit in Stormcast Eternal armies that do not use the Hammers of Sigmar Stormhost paint scheme.

Click here for additional information for on the primer.

After clicking on the link, the players see the following rules on the website:

In addition to these rules, the primer establishes a two wound penalty for all players using circle bases. Players with square bases used in prior versions of Warhammer Fantasy will be able to play without these penalties. As a service to our community, the NOVA Open will run a retrofitting room with bases and glue that its sponsors have generously donated for this year's tournament.
