This month, we're celebrating you,

April showers
may bring May flowers...
but we're also celebrating
volunteer
power.

This month marks National Volunteer Appreciation Month, but at Jersey Cares that may just be any month! And with Earth Day on April 22nd, it's the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and celebrate Mother Earth, as Jersey Cares takes a moment to celebrate all that you've already done for this planet. Volunteering immediately impacts our communities, but it's also the efforts of these millions of communities that culminate into a powerful movement of civic engagement. When you spend a couple hours on the weekend weeding at a state park, or reading to seniors, or serving hot meals to the hungry, you are not only making an investment in the future of your local community, but you speak to the goodness of humanity, and you spark a change in the world as a whole. We aren't kidding! Volunteerism really can make a powerful change in the world around us.

If you don't believe us, just check out some of our upcoming Earth Day projects. And on the first Saturday of May, you'll  really  have a chance to see the power of volunteerism in action with 1500 friends on Jersey Cares Day. Sign up to volunteer, become a Site Captain, sponsor a project's service hours, or become a behind-the-scenes photographer on our biggest annual days of service today.

Annual Days of Service

Jersey Cares Day 2016 is almost upon us, and we have nearly 20 opportunities for volunteer leadership! Projects are similar to calendar opportunities, but are one day only and typically involve 30-100 volunteers with 1-3 Site Captains.

This year, Jersey Cares has revitalization, historical preservation, and landscaping projects in Camden, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson, and Trenton. If you would like to participate in a Site Captain training to lead a project for this annual day of service, please contact Jennifer Lewellen at  [email protected].

Volunteer Star:
Asia Moore

Meet Asia Moore-one of the newest additions to the Project Coordinator family, currently active in the Season of Service Spring Semester. This high school senior is focused on senior care, and plans to use her leadership role to engage volunteers in long-term care facilities. Asia feels that seniors are often forgotten, and wants to help make a difference in their lives. Before she was referred to Jersey Cares through a teacher, she was already making a big impact on the Jersey Shore as well as in New Orleans, where she helped restore homes and beaches from the recent natural disasters. This ambitious young woman is considering law school, but plans to keep her eye on social sciences and civic engagement. Social justice is close to her heart, and she is actively engaged in events, conferences, and presenting on contemporary issues at her own high school. When she isn't changing the world, she's focused on music and plays guitar. A volunteer with an activist background and a classically-trained ear? That's music to our ears.

Skills Trainers, Success Coaches Needed

ServiceWorks - powered by AmeriCorps, the Citi Foundation and Points of Light - is a groundbreaking, national program that uses volunteer service as a strategy to help 25,000 low-income youth and young adults in 10 cities develop the skills they need to prepare for college and careers.

We are now recruiting Success Coaches and Skills Trainers to help run the ServiceWorks program in Newark. Would you give three hours a week for ten weeks to help change the life of a low income young adult? The changes made can be life-altering. Go to http://www.jerseycares.org/serviceworks for more information. We need you!

Corporate Corner

It was a purr-fect day of volunteering for BASF, as employees created "Life is Ruff" kits that were donated to local animals in need. Volunteers weren't kitten around as they created toys for cats and dogs from scratch using string, tennis balls, and fleece. It was impressive to see the employees work together and unleash their creativity.  They also created no-sew fleece beds for sleepy little pups and kitties to rest their weary eyes on. One would say  this was a paw-sitively productive afternoon of volunteering. At the end of the day dozens of bags of treats and toys accompanied with new animals beds were taken directly to an animal shelter in East Hanover, NJ.  Jersey Cares has no bones to pick with BASF. Thank you for your amazing contributions!
