Message from Principal Kuminka

Happy New Year Coebourn Families,

I would like to thank Coebourn's PTL for organizing and running our Holiday Shop in December. Students enjoy this event every year, and they especially appreciate all the parents who helped wrap their gifts. Also, the students enjoyed the annual Sedecky Puppet Show, which is courtesy of our PTL.  Thank you PTL.

Career Day was a huge success. Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Carroll and School Counselor, Ms. Small did an excellent job organizing this event for Coebourn students. I appreciate all the presenters and their willingness to speak to our students about their profession.

Congratulations Coebourn Elementary on your Outstanding Achievements

CAREER DAY AT COEBOURN
Career day was a huge success.  The students thoroughly enjoyed traveling around to classrooms and learning about different professions. We had a tremendous variety....a police officer, fireman, lawyer, athletic trainer, karate instructor, civil engineer, x-ray technician, NFL cinematographer and many more.
Thank you to all of our presenters.

CLASSROOM CONNECTION
It's SUPER in Second Grade

Second grade is working eagerly on Informational Writing. The students had the opportunity to select books from the library and research many aspects of an animal of their choice. They worked cooperatively in groups of four to conduct their research. They are then publishing and illustrating their research using computers.
We are hoping to finalize them this week. In Math we are beginning Topic 7 which will include subtracting two digit numbers. Look out math challenge here we come!
If you get a chance to look at our bulletin board outside of the second grade hall you will see our creative work with Homophones.

Thank you to everyone for sending in box tops...they really do earn us money.  Since September, Coebourn has earned $435.60 towards new playground equipment.
Thank you to Crystal Griffin for volunteering her time counting and organizing those boxtops!

January 22 will be our first school wide pool party at NMS.  Keep an eye out for a flyer to be sent home soon.

Our next meeting is Thursday night, January 7 at 6:30.  All are welcome!!

Thank you to everyone who helps make PTL a success.

New Electronic Community Bulletin Board

Beginning Thursday, October 1, community flyers will go paperless for Penn-Delco.
In our continuing efforts to go paperless, improve efficiency, and extend our outreach to the Aston, Brookhaven, and Parkside communities, Penn-Delco has created an electronic Community Bulletin Board on the district website located under the "Community" tab.

The bulletin board will replace the distribution of hard copy flyers in the schools and is intended for use by our community public and non-profit organizations to provide families with information about upcoming events and opportunities in the community. Penn-Delco School District will not post information from for-profit organizations on its website.

This webpage will be accessible to the public at large via links on each school's webpage as well as the district's main webpage.

Requests for flyer distribution will still be submitted to the Asst. Superintendent's office for approval.

The  Guidelines for Submitting Postings to the Penn-Delco Website Community Bulletin Board are posted on the district website under the Community tab.

Questions? Contact the Assistant Superintendent's office at 610-497-6300, extension 1314.

CALLING All
COEBOURN READERS

Coebourn once again is participating in Scholastic Reading Counts! The goal of Reading Counts is to create lifelong readers by surrounding students with a wide variety of leveled literature and nonfiction texts in the classroom, in the school library, and at home. Students in 2nd grade have a goal of 20,000 words read per month, while students in grades 3-5 are set to reach 30,000 words. Every student who reaches this goal, will receive a special collectible charm from Principal Kuminka.
Students may choose an independent book and when finished,  take a ten question computerized quiz on the book. Seven out of the ten questions must be answered correctly in order for the students to pass the quiz. The total number of words for the books read will be tracked throughout the year. If the book is not a Reading Counts quiz, students may write a summary of the book to receive credit. Any student who reaches 1,000,000 words will be recognized both at school and Brookhaven Borough Council!   Stay tuned......More to come next month about READING COUNTS!!

New Years - A Time to Reflect and Revise

RESOLUTION

Re-sol-u-tion

Re = again

solution = a way to solve a problem

solve = Latin root meaning "loosen" [as in "solvent"]

tion = act of or process of

The beginning of 2016 is a perfect opportunity to help your child reflect on the first half of the school year and to plan for the second half. Typically, students begin the school year with a strong start, completing all assignments on time with great accuracy. Unfortunately, as the first semester unfolds, students sometimes find themselves losing momentum with their studies. Maybe they realize that they took on too many extracurricular activities, or maybe they discover that the course material has become increasingly more difficult than they anticipated. It can be challenging to refocus after the excitement of the holiday. Whatever the case, the New Year provides students and parents with a perfect opportunity to talk about the previous four months of school. In many ways, January can be seen as a new beginning. Students and teachers can reflect on what they have accomplished so far in the school year and plan for the future.

1.      Take a risk. Do not fear failure. This is the time for new things and self-discovery. You'll never know what you like, or how good you are at it, until you try something.

2.      Commit to good grades. Success in life does not mean straight A's, but getting good grades does make life easier. Studying may not be your favorite pastime right now, but it does pay off. The grades you earn now will stay with you a long time. Work to earn the grade you deserve. Think of your grades as a bridge, they will get you where you need to go.

3.      Break your social media habit. Many of us start our homework with the best of intentions, but before we know it we are checking Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, or some other site. Commit to spend less time online, and more time studying.

4.      Eat healthy. Supply your brain with healthy foods. Cut down on sugar and do not skip meals, instead fuel your body with brain healthy foods such as blueberries, salmon, nuts and seeds, eggs, avocados and whole grains.

5.      Get physical. Studying and eating right are not the only things to help improve your performance in school. Physical activity boosts blood flow to the brain and helps you stay focused. Exercise twenty minutes a day to increase your brain power.

6.      Sleep more Getting a good night's sleep is one of the best ways to improve your performance at school. Start your homework right after school; do not try to do so much. This way you can go to bed early and catch some good ZZZ's.

7.      Do not try to do it all. You do not have to say yes to everything. Choose a few things and excel at them, rather than trying to do it all.

8.      Stop Procrastinating. Think about large tasks and break into smaller parts with a deadline for each part. Underestimating the time we have to do homework or write a paper, can lead to rushed work and a poor grade. A good practice for life: start early and finish on time.

A Note From The Nurse

What is the flu?  From the CDC website

Influenza (the flu) is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs caused by influenza viruses. There are many different influenza viruses that are constantly changing. Flu viruses cause illness, hospital stays and deaths in the United States each year.

The flu can be very dangerous for children. Each year about 20,000 children younger than 5 years old are hospitalized from flu complications, like pneumonia.

How can I protect my child against the flu?

To protect against the flu, the first and most important thing you can do is to get for get a flu vaccine for yourself and your child.

What can I do if my child gets sick?

Talk to your doctor early if you are worried about your child's illness.

Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and drinks enough fluids. If your child is 5 years and older and does not have other health problems and gets flu-like symptoms, including a fever and/or cough, consult your doctor as needed.

Coebourn Health Screenings are scheduled for January 7th and 8th, 2016

Coebourn Music News
Congratulations to our "A" Band for TWO very consistent, successful performances!  They were true rock stars as they went "On Tour" in Penn Delco.  Audience members couldn't help but to be in the holiday spirit as they left.

Planning is taking place for "B" and "A" Band concert programs for the spring.  They are going to be very exciting.  Rehearsals before school will begin for both ensembles the first week of March.  Please consult the rehearsal schedule for subsequent rehearsals.

Best of luck goes out to Julia DiNicola (flute) and Alaina Cummings (clarinet) as they proudly represent Coebourn Elementary at the Delaware County Intermediate Band Fest on Monday, January 25, 2016 at Strath Haven Middle School!
