In this issue-

There is a reminder of our first winter family event- a big bonfire.  We also have a very interesting history event planned and there's a hotlink to a cool Daily Herald piece on our own village.

We explain how two of our residents helped out a person in need - a short story about something nice.

And finally, a little more information about the Shanty, its owner, and the expansion plan progress.

We try to create variety in this newsletter - things of interest, useful information, reminders, and hopefully a little something for everyone.

As always, if you have cheers or jeers, you know whom to contact!

Winter event reminder-

We're planning a huge bonfire with your discarded Christmas trees.

Date:  Saturday, January 16 at 6:00pm
Where:  Village Hall
Food: Eddie Bauer food served by our Queens
For kids:  If there is snow, the sled hill will be open
Contest:  Coolest winter headgear for kids
Who:  This is a family event so you can bring your
     relatives, friends, and other hangers-on

In order to make this a BIG bonfire, we need to have a good inventory of your old coniferous seasonal trees.  Here's our plan:  You can either drop them off or we'll pick them up.

To drop off your tree at the village hall:

     * Do so before January 13
     * Drop by the "Tree Drop" sign in parking lot

If you need assistance, we can pick up your tree:

     * Contact Administrator Amidei at 847-336-7771 or email [email protected]

Please, only real trees, no artificials.  Thanks.
Are you a history buff?

Interested in the history of Lake County?  Then we have a program for you.

On Thursday, January 28, the Lake County Discovery Museum will present an overview of our history beginning with the 17th century French voyagers.

The presentation will cover agriculture, resorts, breweries, barbed wire manufacturers, motion pictures, religious communities, and military installations.

The speaker will be Jennifer Hart of the Discovery Museum.

Place:  Village Hall
Time:  Starts at 7pm, ends at 8pm
Refreshments:  Coffee and donuts
Registration required:  Space limits us to 35 people;      Please call the village hall at 847-336-7771 or
     email [email protected]

Bonus:  Shawn Ford of our own Newport Township Historical Society will provide a handout of our own township's history.

If this event proves to be popular, we might host a series of continuing lectures.

An act of kindness begins the year-

A nice gesture by two local residents to help one of our downtown retailers kicks off the new year with an act of kindness.

You'll remember the heavy, wet snow of a few days ago.  County snowplows pushed tons of the stuff onto the frontage property of our own Treasure Depot and, as you'll also recall, the bottom two inches of the nasty stuff turned into ice almost immediately.

Conventional snowplows couldn't clear the way for Laurie Zupansic to open her doors.  Local boy Dave Banick chipped ice from the sidewalk and Wadsworth resident Greg Taylor showed up with a front end loader to clear the steep driveway and parking lot.

Because of their efforts, both the Depot and Historical Society then had access.  And this was done on New Year's Day.

Thank you guys for your neighborly acts of kindness and help.
Daily Herald piece on Wadsworth-

A few weeks back the Daily Herald did a piece on our village, complete with text and 34 photos.  It's nice work!

Shanty expansions plans-

The Shanty expansion plans are now coming to completion and we know what they are.  Stay tuned for the next issue of this newsletter which will introduce those plans and also delight you with a one-on-one interview with owner Dimitri Kallianis.

And we'll reveal a recipe contest designed to help celebrate the expansion.  If you're a cook and want to have Chef Dimitri showcase your specialty, this could be your chance.
