Reading Outdoors

With warmer weather on the way, it's a great time of year to grab a book and head outdoors! Backyards, parks, and neighborhood walks can lead to interesting conversations and new vocabulary words, observations, and investigations. Try these fun outdoor exploration activities to nurture the growing reader in your home!
  • Notice and describe trees and other outdoor plants and their parts. Vocabulary might include trunks, branches, stems, leaves, and flowers. See how many different types of leaves you can gather. Describe and sort leaves by shape, size, and color.
  • Observe any birds, squirrels, insects, and worms. Keep track of the different animals and insects you find. If possible, take pictures or draw a sketch of any unusual or unfamiliar ones. Other spots include a wood pile, a garden, or near the bright lights of a parking lot.
  • Compare
the illustrations in your favorite nature-themed book with the real-life settings. What type of trees, animals, and insects on the page can you find in your neighborhood?
Talking starts with reading!

Reading to children at an early age is crucial to the development of their language skills.  Take time to make the most of reading time with your child.

Read to your young children early and frequently. It is never too  early to start reading to children and that is why the Imagination Library begins at birth!

Reading with babies and young children helps in many ways, including how many words they know, how they talk and how they learn to read. Research finds that reading to your child often helps to ensure that they will be successful in school and in life. Parents should try to read to their children  every dayRead more tips and ideas

READING TIP OF THE MONTH
Laugh - Have Fun - Enjoy time together. Make reading an enjoyable pastime for your child. Don't make it a punishment or reward, but a special time to enjoy. If your little one is not enjoying the book, just talk about the pictures to finish it up and try again later.
