A Note From Our Director

This is the last column for 2016. The exciting news is that we have the privilege of awarding 40+ Human Services Management Certificates, which took place at the pre-graduation graduation ceremony December 15. We were pleased to have remarks from the Dean as well as graduating students, their families, and friends.

I want to personally wish all of you the very best of luck in the job search. Some of you are already set up in the workplace; others are still prospecting. Let me know if I can help you in any way. As you will be starting new jobs, I thought the following suggestions from Art Petty would be good to keep in mind. After all, we only have one chance to make a first impression. His blog is below. He is business focused but thoughtful. You might also want to consider subscribing to the New Leaders Newsletter.

For anyone getting started (or starting over) on their leadership journeyit pays to remember:
  1. Your new title confers authority. You have to earn the respect of your team members.
  2. When they succeed, you win.
  3. Your boss voted to trust you by promoting you. Don't let her down. Strengthen her team and help her achieve her goals. When she wins, you win.
  4. Accountability is a two-way street. Your do must match your tell.
  5. Everyone around you knows if you are in this for yourself or for the group.
  6. Coaching takes place one encounter at a time, every day. Every single day.
  7. You don't have to act like you're the smartest person in the room. Instead, find the smartest person in the room and ask.
  8. At your next opportunity to take credit, don't. Instead, dispense it widely. Rinse and repeat.
  9. Overheard from a new manager: "How hard can this job possibly be?" You have no idea.
  10. While you are agonizing over that decision, everyone is waiting.
Take this job seriously. You're responsible for the success of your team members.

I am grateful for having the opportunity of knowing and working with you. I wish you a very joyous holiday season.

Positive Links Speaker Series Session: No Sweat-Leveraging Science to Concurrently Foster Employee Health and Well-being and Organizational Thriving
Tuesday, January 12, 2016 4:00-5:00 PM
The Colloquium, 6th Floor, Ross Building, Stephen M. Ross School of Business
Reception Immediately Following
Do you want to know why most people don't stay motivated to practice healthy behaviors (exercise, dietary change, etc.), even when they deeply want to? In this presentation, Michelle presents research explaining why the traditional approach to promoting healthy behaviors sets employees and patients up for short-term rather than sustainable behavior. Integrating behavioral science with positive organizational scholarship, she will explain how sustainable behavior change, personal well-being, and organizational thriving can result from reframing "healthy choices" and self-care with "The Right Whys" (e.g., vitality). Come to this session if you want to learn a new science- and practice-based approach for motivating and maintaining healthy behaviors among individuals that concurrently fosters outcomes that organizations desire.
