WELCOME

Thank you for your continued interest in Downsview Park and welcome to this issue of the Downsview Lands newsletter. In an ongoing effort to engage and encourage public participation, Canada Lands Company has developed this newsletter to offer subscribers the latest information about the Downsview Lands project and offer insight into the planning process as Canada Lands continues to develop these exciting new neighbourhoods and deliver on community benefits. Please let us know your thoughts, we welcome your feedback!

William Baker Neighbourhood Update
Woodlot access update

As we mentioned in our last newsletter, following further work set to be completed in the early summer such as pathway installation, seeding and tree planting, Canada Lands will be pleased to provide the community with safe pedestrian access to the mature, permanent woodlot that's perfect for having a leisurely stroll, birding and observing wildlife and nature in the southern portion of the William Baker neighbourhood. Much of this woodlot will eventually be a park area on full development of the neighbourhood.

Currently, our contractor is on-site completing the final stages of the initial demolition process which includes the removal of old fencing along the south and east boundaries of the site, the installation of a new fence along the northern boundary of the woodlot, fine grading and seeding, as well as a general clean-up of the site. Once this is complete, a second contractor will install the components of the landscape plan, which includes walkway connections into the site, with additional lighting, tree planting, benches and garbage receptacles. This work is expected to be completed by August. Going forward, our own property management team will then take over the maintenance of the site.

Stanley Greene Neighbourhood Update
Downsview's newest community is coming to life

The second and final phase of the Stanley Greene neighbourhood consists of a 12-acre site known as Block G, and part of the City of Toronto's approved Secondary Plan. As part of formalizing this final phase Canada Lands has submitted a draft plan of subdivision application to the City of Toronto that conforms with the requirements of the approved District Plan for this neighbourhood. No changes to thisapproved plan are being sought. Click on this link to view the District Plan.Canada Lands is expecting to have phase two city approvals in early 2016, at which time the company will complete its sales and marketing program for the site.

Public Art Coming to Stanley Greene

As previously mentioned in our last newsletter we are now ready to move forward with our public art process in this neighbourhood. Canada Lands launched an international call for proposals, and assembled a committee of art experts and aficionados who together selected Michael Singer as the  artist who will develop the design concept and fabrication for the public art installation in Stanley Greene. We've also consulted with the City of Toronto and received great advice from public art professionals, but now we would like to hear your thoughts. Canada Lands will be hosting a "Conversation with the Artist" event where Michael will be available to meet with anyone interested in this aspect of the development work and wishes to impart their ideas and recollections of the area that will inform, and inspire the artwork. This information will surely be invaluable to Canada Lands and Mr. Singer as he begins to develop the art installation for this new community. Stay tuned as we finalize the details.

Finally, you'll notice continued construction activity throughout the summer months as Canada Lands proceeds with the servicing work in the first phase of the site.

Park, Train, Subways
How a busy community and rail line can co-exist

Downsview Park Station will be a vital link between many different transit modes (including TTC subway, buses and GO Transit trains) as well as  the Downsview community and Downsview Park. With the addition of such an important intermodal station set to open in 2017, it's easy to ask ourselves, "how will rail traffic and a busy community co-exist?"

The answer to this question lies within the City's Secondary Plan.

The Secondary Plan outlines several elements that will enable the efficient movement of trains and other modes of public transit as well as vehicles and pedestrians. Some examples include directional ramps, collector roads, grade separations and pedestrian connections. These will be incorporated as the Downsview Area Plan is implemented.

With this in mind, rail safety is a priority. Canada Lands will continue to work with its city and provincial partners who have jurisdictional oversight authority for these matters to ensure that safety and security measures are implemented as required. As the development of this area progresses in the coming years, travel by pedestrians and cars through this area will be an important planning aspect.  This situation however is not unique; there are many areas in the Greater Toronto Area where cars, pedestrians and trains co-exist and it's up to each and every one of us to exercise caution and common sense when walking or driving near or across railway tracks.

Downsview Park Update
Summer events and you

Now that the summer season is well underway at Downsview Park, we've already seen many families and neighbours out and about in the Park on those especially sunny days.

Doors Open Toronto

Canada Lands would like to thank everyone that came to the Downsview Park Sports Centre (75 Carl Hall Road) for our Doors Open Toronto event on the May 23-24 weekend. In collaboration with the City of Toronto, the Sports Centre was just one of the hundreds of sites that visitors were welcome to explore and partake in activities. In addition, we also encouraged visitors to take public transit to the Park by listing transit options on our website and producing maps for event organizers to educate attendees on all transportation options before arriving. Over 700 visitors visited the Sports Centre and enjoyed activities at Grand Prix Kartways, National Squash Academy, True North Climbing and The Hangar with Human Moves. We can't wait to see you back at the Sports Centre!

Jane's Walk

We would also like to recognize the efforts of Rosanna Iaboni for organizing a community-led Jane's Walk this past May. For more information on the walk, please visit http://janeswalk.org/canada/toronto/discovering-downsview-park/

Wild Reading Walk

More thanks are in order for everyone who participated in our Wild Reading Walk program, a collaboration between the Park's education team and the Toronto Public Library. Between May 16 - 30, families and friends alike could sign out an especially selected book set from the library and follow along a map of the Park for a free self-guided reading walk. We hope you all enjoyed this program; be sure to keep an eye out for even more free community activities.

Argonauts

Just a reminder that team practices are open to the public this season! The Argonauts practice on-site at 79 Carl Hall Road in Downsview Park.

Seasonal TTC Bus Service

This summer, take the TTC to Downsview Park! Seasonal service for the 101 Downsview Park bus route operates between Downsview station and the Park. For more information, please visit https://www.ttc.ca/Routes/101/RouteDescription.jsp?tabName=route

Bus Service for Special Events
With over 200,000 attendees visiting the Park last year for various events, Canada Lands works with event organizers and the TTC every summer to coordinate and optimize all possible transit options. Although ultimately determined by the TTC, as in previous years, additional express buses (101 Downsview Park) between the Park and Downsview Station are increased for major events. Most large concerts are only accessible via a single entrance and exit located at the Festival Terrace on Carl Hall Road, so it is arranged for the express buses drop-off and pick up passengers directly in front of the Festival Terrace event entrance allowing for convenient, direct access from the Park to Downsview Station. In addition, we also encourage visitors to take public transit to the Park by listing transit options on our website and producing maps for event organizers to educate attendees on all transportation options before arriving. We also look forward to the opening of the new Downsview Park TTC/GO station that is sure to encourage more visitors to utilize public transit options.
