March 2016 Newsletter
To the 2-1-1 Community,

The sun is shining, smiles all around.  Winter has left us with some beautiful images of snow-covered mountains and reservoirs full of water.  With spring upon us, there's a freshness in the air, a new beginning of sorts.

Let us not forget about the hard work being done by our partner agencies day in and day out.  Rain or shine, they show up to help better the lives of those in our community.  For that, we are forever grateful.

2-1-1 Sacramento is proud to host the most comprehensive database of community resources in Sacramento County.  Together, with our partners, we are changing lives, removing barriers and providing vital data and trend information for proactive community planning.  If you know of a partner agency in which 2-1-1 can be of added value, please let us know!

Sincerely,

Richard Abrusci
Director, 2-1-1 Sacramento

Do you need help paying for food? You may qualify for CalFresh. The income limits have recently gone up so more families can now qualify.  CalFresh, formerly known as food stamps, is accessible to individuals with a gross monthly income of less than $1,962. Each additional individual in the house raises the threshold by $694, up to six people. If you have six people in your household, you can make up to $5,430 in gross monthly income and still qualify. CalFresh aims to put healthy and nutritious food on the table and can be used to purchase most foods at many markets, farmers' markets and food stores. During the summer months, certain farmers markets that accept the EBT card will match dollar to dollar (up to $20) for fresh produce, making it that much more rewarding to eat healthy. CALIFORNIA EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (EITC)...

There is a new tax credit this year that puts money back into the pockets of working Californians. The California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) provides an opportunity for individuals and families to get ahead. Families can earn up to $6,000 with this new credit when combined with the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). If you have at least two children and earned less than $13,870 in 2015, you're eligible to earn up to a $2,358 tax credit just by getting your taxes done. Only have one child and made less than $9,880? You can still earn a $1,428 tax credit by simply filing your taxes. Individuals with no children who made less than $6,850 can receive an extra $214 on their tax return.

Nearly 30,000 families and individuals in Sacramento County will be eligible for this new credit. Don't miss out on money that is available to you from the state of California.

On February 18, 2016, a gentleman came into the Goodwill building clutching a nervous smile and a VITA flyer. He found our flyer advertising tax appointments, but was unable to call and make an appointment because he is totally and permanently deaf. In search of familiarity and convenience in this new town, he ventured through our doors in hopes for tax assistance. I had the invaluable opportunity to use the public computers in the lobby to walk him through the sometimes daunting intricacies of the tax world. He and I communicated by typing notes into our phones as we navigated through his documents together. I sat with him for roughly an hour and became rather connected to him despite us never exchanging a single word. Upon departure, the nervousness on his face was wiped away by the heftiness of his bank account. I value the opportunity this client presented to me in order to strengthen my nonverbal communication skills, patience, and knowledge on tax preparation. This one Thursday in February taught me that some of the largest impacts do not need to make a sound in order to be heard.
