Rabbi's Message
Growing up very Orthodox in Brooklyn conjures up many warm memories. Passover afforded me many memories - all of them happy.
One such memory is when, as the Holiday drew near, the Jewish hood went through a metamorphosis.
I distinctly remember Orthodox men, women and children scurrying around the neighborhood clearing out the grocery stores of cleaning products used to cleanse the occupants' house. The law requires that each residence be sparkling clean from top to bottom to the extent that not one crumb or morsel of bread be found. And, Heaven forbid, if one is discovered on the night before Pesach, we had to go into action as no one wanted the home and all its occupants to be tarnished.....Forever!
The call went out for a feather to sweep up the wayward crumb into a dustpan and take it out to the backyard, light a match and burn the offensive piece of leavened bread so that it never again would be able to desecrate anyone else's Jewish home on the eve of Passover.
The strange thing is, there was always a crumb around after thoroughly sweeping the carpets. I never understood how we overlooked it!
I suspect my father placed it there when my brother and I weren't looking as to emphasize the importance of a bread free house. He was funny that way.
Happy Passover, everybody
Much Love, Rabbi Jerry

REVIEW FROM THE PEW
By Rabbi Jerry Ram Cutler
"A Gentleman's Guide To Love & Murder"
currently at the Ahmanson Theatre is a glorious musical romp filled with madness, silliness, love, murder and two acts of wall-to-wall humor.
Brilliantly written by Robert L. Freedman and directed by Darko Tresnjak "A Gentleman's Guide....." takes off and doesn't relent until the final curtain when John Rapson and Kevin Massey take their bows to thunderous applause.
The plot based loosely on the 1907 Roy Honiuman novel, "Israel Rank: The Autobiography Of A Criminal." Initially an English production movie starring Alec Guiness, the poor relative of a distinguished and wealthy Duke who is eighth in line to the title, Guiness methodically murders his way up the ladder to impress a beautiful woman.
The current production stars John Rapson in the role of the eight Dukes who meet their demise through the clever schemes of the love stricken, Kevin Massey. Rapson's rapid change of costumes and demeanor, which brings to mind the iconic Sid Caesar's overpowering performance in Broadway's " Little Me,"is mind boggling as he easily assumes the role of the Duke next in line to be De-Duked by the cool and methodical murderer, Monty Navarro. Both men are brilliant.
An excellent cast including Kristen Beth Williams and Adrienne Eller, both who possess god-gifted voices, adds to the mayhem and clever lyrics provided by Freedman and Steven Lutvak who also wrote the score.
"A Gentleman's Guide To Love and Murder," has lost none of its verve and never ending energy since winning the 68th Tony Awards on Broadway. The sets by Alexander Dodge, costumes by Linda Cho and Peggy Hickey's choreography are praiseworthy as well.
