CASE STUDY: First Florida project with SidePlate Bolted is a huge success
The Oviedo Medical Center project entailed a horizontal expansion to an existing hospital. The SE and GC had previously used SidePlate designs on seismic projects, but this was their first with SidePlate on a non-seismic project.
Benefits of the SidePlate design using W14 cols:
--saved 105 tons of steel vs. conventional design
--46% fewer moment connections
--31% fewer moment frame beam ends
--no field welding or Ultrasonic Testing
Here's what the team had to say:
John Thomas, Project Manager for Layton Construction: "
This project was a mirror image of two others recently completed in Texas which did not utilize the SidePlate technology. Each of those projects required the use of two cranes to meet a 12 week schedule, while the SidePlate structure needed a single crane to maintain the same schedule, saving roughly $70K."
Kaylor McCain of Structural Design Group: "The owner benefits from the cost savings of an economical design. The contractor benefits from the time savings. The EOR benefits from the design and detailing assistance provided by the professionals at SidePlate, who went above and beyond my expectations to make this project a success."

Moment frames are typically governed by drift, rather than strength. And engineers don't have many conventional options for controlling drift, other than adding more frames or heavier steel sections. But a SidePlate connection is much stiffer than any other, which reduces drift and makes lateral frames more efficient. This means that SidePlate designs use less steel tonnage and likely have fewer moment connections than other moment frame designs.
SidePlate isn't just another connection option, it's an entire lateral system. Click the image above for a short overview on how a SidePlate project works.
DID YOU KNOW? TIME FOR THE STEEL CONFERENCE
NASCC: THE STEEL CONFERENCE IS IN ORLANDO NEXT MONTH
If you've attended this
AISC conference in the past, you know that it's the premiere event for those of us designing, fabricating, constructing, and working in the steel industry. With a perfect mix of technical and practical sessions, hands-on exhibit time, and networking events, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better value for the time and money invested. Click on the logo above for more info. And if you're attending this year, stop by our booth #1008 to say hello.
