As we begin our winter break, please join me in thanking our amazing BPY staff for an incredible first half of the school year! Thank you as well to all of our parents and volunteers for partnering with us every day to create a positive learning environment and supportive community for our children.
A special thank you to Gan Keshet for creating this helpful digital
siddur for our early childhood students to use over the break.
Best wishes to all of our students, staff members, and families for a restful and enjoyable winter break.
We can't wait to welcome everyone back to school on Monday, February 1!
Todah Rabbah,

Mazal Tov to Kitah Aleph!
|
Kol hakavod to our first graders and their teachers on an incredible Mesibat HaSiddur performance on Sunday! The students were so excited to start using their brand new siddurim in school this week. We were so happy to share this special milestone with our first graders and their families!
Thank you to the sponsors of this year's Mesibat HaSiddur, Rachel and Daniel Schwartz, who dedicated the event to wish mazal tov to the first grade class! שהחינו וקימנו והגיענו לזמן הזה

Martin Luther King Jr. Day |
BPY classes observed Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday in a variety of meaningful ways. Here are some examples:
Gan Shira (PK) discussed how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that everyone would be equal and the children drew pictures of dreams they have. They also used people manipulatives to make equal math equations and fish manipulatives to put equal numbers of fish in each colored bowl.
Gan Rina (PK) children partnered with friends to investigate some of their similarities and differences. Similarities included: both children have hair, necks, and wear shirts. Some differences included: different hair accessories, characters on clothing, and eye color. Through this activity, they understood Martin Luther King Jr.'s message that we all have many similarities and differences and what matters most is what is on the inside.
First graders learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and other important figures in the civil rights movement like Rosa Parks. They read books about the subject and even reenacted the Montgomery bus boycott!
Second graders have been studying the life of Martin Luther King Jr. as part of their biography unit. On Monday, they watched part of his "I Have a Dream" speech and connected his famous line about his children being judged, "not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character," to their study of character traits in Reader's Workshop.
Third graders
used three videos to spark important discussions about Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and legacy, equality, perseverance, and standing up against injustice.
Fourth graders started creating an "Acts of Kindness & Justice" wall in their classroom, inspired by the "Kindness and Justice Challenge" proposed by Martin Luther King III and Coretta Scott King in 1999 through an organization called DoSomething.org. Each time a student does an act of kindness or justice, s/he adds a sentence to his or her wall page.
The completed pages will then be displayed in their classroom.
Fifth graders discussed some ways they can help make our community a better place. They came up with great ideas such as giving food to the homeless, volunteering in nursing homes, writing letters to American troops overseas, giving
tzedaka
and teaching others about the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the values he stood for.
Eighth graders have been investigating the civil rights movement over the course of the semester, researching important historical events and discussing numerous texts related to the topic. On Monday, students took the opportunity to focus on important quotes of Dr. King's, using their wealth of existing knowledge to help them think deeply about his messages and share their perspectives and interpretation with their peers.

Friendship Circle Camp at BPY
|
We were so excited to host Friendship Circle of Bergen County camp at BPY on Monday! Our seventh grade students spent the day with the Friendship Circle campers, making new friends, participating in activities at BPY, and going on a special trip to The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. Thank you Friendship Circle for spending the day with us!

Getting Ready for Tu B'Shvat
|
Even though Tu B'Shvat falls during winter break this year, BPY students got to observe the holiday early in school. Here are some of the Tu B'Shvat activities our students participated in:
Gan Rina (PK) learned how trees help us and what they provide. They did an experiment to see how plants suck water up through their roots. They put food coloring and water in a jar with white flowers and observed how the carnations turned the same color as the water!
Second graders have been learning all about different kinds of trees and reading and writing their own stories about them in Hebrew. To prepare for Tu B'Shvat, they also made and enjoyed a delicious fruit salad!
Third graders said
brachot, sang songs, and enjoyed some delicious treats at their Tu B'Shvat seder!
In addition to holding a beautiful Tu B'Shvat seder, junior high students explored the theme of "ki ha'adam etz hasadeh" and began creating their own family trees at www.geni.com.

Rabbi Menachem Genack Speaks About Kashrut |
Thank you to Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of the
Orthodox Union's kosher division and BPY grandparent, for coming in to speak with our junior high school students this week. Rabbi Genack described some of his work at the OU, explained some of the practical intricacies of kashrut that the OU encounters, and answered student questions. What a wonderful way to complete our junior high unit on kashrut!
