GREY MATTERS 2016 CALL FOR PRESENTERS
Organizers for the
Grey Matters conference invite submissions from individuals and organizations interested in presenting at the 2016 conference to be held September 20-21 in Grande Prairie.
The Planning Committee's vision for this year's conference is Changing Faces. This vision should be reflected in the topic of the presentation. During the selection process, preference will be given to presentations using one or more of the following topics: social inclusion/loneliness, cognition, mental health, memory care, cross cultural care, marginalized seniors, addictions, employment, and demographics. Submissions for poster presentations are also being accepted.

PROJECT ACCELERATOR GRANT: WINTER EDITION
Make Something Edmonton will provide a
microgrant of up to $2,500 for winter-themed projects that capture the socially-oriented spirit of Make Something Edmonton and make the city more fun, more beautiful, more caring or more engaging in some way. The project must be realized between February 5 and March 18, 2016.
Make Something Edmonton would love to see more seniors involved in projects so consider submitting your idea! The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, but the application process is straightforward so it is easy to apply.

LEADERSHIP INTERNSHIP
The University of Alberta's Peter Lougheed Leadership College (PLLC) is an undergraduate leadership development program that forges leaders through formal and co-curricular learning, engagement, and mentorship. Students complete a 200 hour "Stretch Experience" from May to August which gives them the opportunity to apply their leadership skills as part of an existing project or in a self-directed project that would benefit an organization.

AGING AND URBANIZATION: PRINCIPLES FOR CREATING SUSTAINABLE, GROWTH-ORIENTED AND AGE-FRIENDLY CITIES
McGraw Hill Financial Global Institute in partnership with the Global Coalition on Aging has released a
report that examines the intersection between rapid urbanization and aging populations. The report includes the findings of a survey to determine global attitudes on changing demographics and how cities are addressing them.
The report also outlines a set of principles to advance the creation of self-sustaining cities that support residents of all ages:
- Infrastructure and transportation that accommodates citizens of all generations
- Housing that allows residents to age in place
- Robust community health programs
- Opportunities for continuing work, education, and recreation for all ages

Enjoy live swing, jazz and big band music on most Sundays throughout January and February. Each week
local bands will be joined by the Sugar Swing Dance Club to help put the boogie-woogie in your step. This free event is open to the public and all who want to jive.
If you'd rather be outdoors, the music will be broadcast directly outside for the enjoyment of ice skaters on City Hall Plaza. Free skate rentals will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

Volunteer/Work Opportunities for Seniors

MEMORIES OF BONNIE DOON
The Bonnie Doon Community League is embarking on a short-term history project to gather memories of Bonnie Doon and they are looking for
volunteers to:
- Interview seniors
- Conduct research in Edmonton-area archives
- Transcribe recordings
- Photograph old buildings around the neighbourhood
Patience, good communication, a positive outlook and an interest in the community are essential. Research skills, photography and writing talent are assets. Interviews will be conducted in French or English.
The volunteer commitment is flexible and will require no more than 25 hours over 3 or 4 months.
Everyone with an interest in learning more about the project is welcome to attend the Volunteer Workshop on January 30 from 1 - 3 p.m. at La Salle St. Jean, St. Thomas d'Aquin (French) Church, 8410 - 89 Street. For more information contact Margaret Russell at [email protected].
