2016 NY SOLAR SUMMIT - JUNE 20TH
The Age of Solar

Over a century ago, visionaries built the infrastructure that helped realize Thomas Edison's innovations and Americans became accustomed to accessing electric power at the flick of a switch. However, after decades of crippling storms, fossil fuel instabilities, grid vulnerabilities and political and economic turmoil around the globe, our populace agrees that a 21st Century infrastructure must include renewable energy. Mainstream is ready for Solar. Sponsor the 10th annual NY Solar Summit

NYS PSC UPDATES 'SIR' TO SPUR BIG PV
The New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) has unveiled new regulations aimed at making it faster and easier for solar energy, microgrids and other distributed generation (DG) projects to connect to the electric grid. The State has increased the size of projects eligible for the Standardized Interconnection Requirements (SIR) from 2 MW to 5 MW. Other rule changes made by the commission include reducing upfront interconnection costs to 25 percent and also amended the rules so that utilities can more-easily process and analyze applications. The full order,  Case 15-M-0127,  can be found on the New York PSC website.
CUNY EMPLOYEE SOLAR PROGRAM
A Case Study for Employers

With support from the NY-Sun Initiative Sustainable CUNY of the City University of New York (CUNY) worked with Vote Solar to design the first employer based group purchasing model in New York State. Long a proponent of sustainable actions, CUNY signed on to offer the opportunity to its own faculty and staff. Through the model program, the obligations of an employer were simple: help select an installer who agreed to program terms and provided discounted rates, and send notices on informational workshops and webinars to their employee database of faculty and staff. Sustainable CUNY and Vote Solar as program leads handled the rest. The results were a win-win all around. 44 CUNY employees and their friends signed contracts to install over 200 kW of solar at a discounted rate that was $1.87 per watt below the Downstate-NY residential average. CATCHING THE SUN
A new documentary captures the global race to lead the clean energy future through the stories of workers and entrepreneurs in the U.S. and China. Over the course of a solar jobs training program, Catching the Sun follows the hope and heartbreak of unemployed American workers seeking jobs in the solar industry. See the Film
RAPID SHUTDOWN WEBINAR
The PV Trainers Network will be hosting a Rapid Shutdown webinar on April 26th. PVTN Master Trainer John Doty will be presenting on Section 690.12 of the National Electric Code, also known as Rapid Shutdown. The presentation will include:
  • Various methods of implementing Rapid Shutdown on PV systems
  • PV systems that require Rapid Shutdown
  • Requirements of NEC sections 690.12
  • Anticipated changes to the Rapid Shutdown requirements in the 2017 NEC
SOLAR IN THE CITY
NYC SEEKING SITES FOR SHARED SOLAR
As part of the NYC Solar Partnership's Shared Solar initiative, Sustainable CUNY is reviewing responses to the recent Request for Information (RFI) from solar installers to ensure that the challenges identified are addressed and an equitable approach that ensures low-to-moderate income community participation is integrated into the Mayor's shared solar program for NYC. Sustainable CUNY is currently looking for potential host sites in Brooklyn Community Board 6 as a next step in the Solarize Brooklyn CB6 campaign, as well as other potential sites throughout the City. If you are interested in hosting a community shared solar system or know someone who might, please email: [email protected].
STORAGE INTEREST HIGH
Over 100 industry representatives attended the NYC Solar+Storage workshop for solar installers. Installers saw presentations from Con Edison, the NYC DOB and FDNY on both the solar process and current storage process in NYC and on the interconnection and permitting processes for both solar and energy storage in NYC Cadmus presented on solar quality assurance and findings from the field. CON EDISON TOPS 100 MW
Con Edison's service territory covers all five boroughs of NYC plus Westchester County. Total PV capacity in Con Edison territory in 2013 was 35 MW. Recently, total capacity topped 100 MW of solar in Con Edison territory, with 67% of the PV on NYC rooftops.

Correction: Last Months "CUNY Led Group Purchasing 1 MW+ "  article highlighted the installed solar of the two CUNY led SunShare programs ( 572.61 kW) but omitted installed solar data from Solarize Huntington(495.3 kW) and Solarize CB6 (141 kW), also led by CUNY. Together the CUNY-led Group Purchasing Programs have added  1.208  MW of solar in New York.
