Pastoral Counseling Specialist Program Update

Susan Ackelson, M.S.W., (photo) a therapist at the Center, recently presented on "Trauma and the Body" to students in the Center's Pastoral Care Specialist program, a professional development series for faith leaders who are often a front-line resource for individuals and families experiencing problems in their daily lives. Participants meet on a monthly to learn from a roster of experts. Topics include addiction, co-dependency, caregiver stress, loss and grief, depression, the spirituality of aging, and more.

Presently, we have a wonderful group of students participating in the Pastoral Counseling Specialist program, and we will soon be ready to accept registrations for next year. Watch for more information.

Suicide is a serious public health problem that affects people of all ages. You can help prevent suicide in our community by knowing the facts, warning signs and where to get help. To address this crisis, the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center is providing a series of prevention trainings for individuals in a variety of roles to learn to recognize the signs of risk and the techniques to help those contemplating suicide.

The Center is pleased to collaborate with several community groups including the Polk County Suicide Prevention Coalition, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness Walks, Iowa Army National Guard and Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Additionally, we thank the L illy Endowment for generous funding to help reduce the costs for faith leaders to participate.
