Industrial Engineer to Director of Operations: How Engineering and Healthcare Work Together

Jean Anne Larson has taken a new position with the University of Alabama - Birmingham Health System. She will become their first Leadership Development Officer working with the CEO of the system and the dean of the Medical School. Larson's charge is to make sure that current and future leaders have the tools, resources, competencies and training to ensure that the organization is well- positioned to meet its strategic goals and objectives ensuring the sustained, long-term success of UAB-Medicine.

Karl Kraebber has taken a new position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as director of xenotransplantation operations. He will be continuing his work transitioning the xenotransplantation research of Dr. Joe Tector into clinical trials and expanding into full-scale production.


Corbin Pozar took a new position with University of Wisconsin Health. He will be working as a quality improvement specialist.




Seven SHS members will be recognized at the IIE Annual Conference Honors & Awards Banquet on Monday, May 23 in Anaheim, California. The members and their awards are:

This month's SHS Young Professionals Highlight is 
Amy Slovacek
Amy Slovacek is the director of planning and operational excellence at Lutheran Senior Services in St. Louis, Missouri. Slovacek has a B.S. in industrial and systems engineering from Auburn University and is an ASQ-certified Six Sigma black belt. Slovacek worked in manufacturing before entering the healthcare industry and is a wonderful addition to our Early Career/Young Professionals Committee because she is looking to expand her healthcare systems knowledge, network with other early career professionals within SHS and strengthen her project and team management skills. In her spare time, Slovacek enjoys going on adventures such as scuba diving and skydiving, singing karaoke and spending time with her pet cats.

Is Your Staffing Ratio Right for Your Case Management Model?
A recent article recommends case management staffing models should be based on models rather than patient ratios. Priority should be given to evaluating tasks and activities that case managers are performing and focusing on high-value activities and shifting non licensure required activities to other staff.

Hosted by the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR), this two-day event gathers tech-minded individuals and teams with mentors from the patient, physician, and publishing communities to improve the exchange of information among patient, healthcare provider, and peer-review communities.
