In Memorium: Shirley Rawls
|
We have recently learned of the passing of Shirley Rawls on a recent family trip to Texas, but do not have any further information.
As President of the local Democratic Women's Club, member of our Democratic Executive Committee and Treasurer of the Florida National Organization for Women, among other activites, Shirley was a dedicated Democrat who participated with enthusiasm in everything in which she participated.
Many of you will remember Shirley who spoke on behalf of the Hillary Clinton Campaign during our first Presidential Forum on Monday, February 15 at Democratic Headquarters.
We will share more information with you as we are informed.
Shirley, you will be missed by your friends, family and all who have come to know you.

Saturday, March 26. It was a big success and we enjoyed the delicious food and company.
And a very special thanks to Johnny Barns for re-opening the restaurant this one day to support the Democratic Party. Even though the restaurant is no longer open, Johnny is available to cater special events and family gatherings. He can be contacted on 904-599-6314.And you can enjoy his Fried Chicken Dinner at the Shriner's Club on Friday, April 29.

Democratic Party at the National, State and Local Levels
|
Do you want to become a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention to be held in Philadelphia, PA from July 25 to 28?
The process to select Florida's delegates to the Convention works as follows:
The results of Florida's March 15, 2016 presidential primary election will be used to apportion delegates to the national convention. In the current US House District 6, (which includes all of St. Johns County, parts of Putnam County, all of Flagler County and the northern part of Volusia County) the allocation of delegates is as follows: 3 Clinton delegates (2 women and 1 man) and 2 Sanders delegates (1 woman and 1 man).
On May 7, 2016, grassroots Democrats from each of Florida's 27 congressional districts will meet in congressional district caucuses between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM to elect 135 district-level delegates to the Democratic National Convention. The caucus for US House District 6 will be held at
Volusia Teachers Organization, 1381 Educators Rd., Daytona Beach, FL 32124. Please note, if you wish to be a delegate you have to fill in a delegate form (see information below) and return it to the Florida Democratic Party office before April, 7, 2016 on which you state your preference for Clinton or Sanders. Then you will need to campaign for this position and to recruit a large number of registered Democrats to support you for this position and who are willing to travel with you to Daytona at this time to vote for you.
Following the congressional district caucuses, the Florida Democratic Party will hold a special meeting in Orlando, Florida, May 21, 2016, where the district-level delegates will meet to select 27 Pledged Party Leader and Elected Official (PLEO) Delegates, 45 At-Large Delegates, and 17 At-Large Alternates to the Democratic National Convention.
To take part in Florida's 2016 National Convention Delegate Selection Process, please complete the 2016 "District Level Delegate Filing Form" which is found on the following website: http://www.floridadems.org/our-party/national-convention. Any registered Democrat can apply to be a delegate, but those who have been active within the party will have a better chance of being elected because of their local supporters.

And you may want to talk with one of four 2012 delegates from St. Johns County who can inform you about their experience.

DCCA Meeting and Retreat in Orlando April 1-3, 2016
During the weekend of April 1 to 3, the Democratic County Chairs Association (DCCA) will hold their annual retreat at the Doubletree Hotel Orlando.
During this weekend there will be a reception on Friday evening prior to a number to the Saturday meetings of the Small County Coalition, the Executive Committee, a session on how to become a delegate to the National Convention, multiple training sessions, caucus meetings, and the opportunity to purchase tickets to attend the Black Caucus Gala at a neighboring hotel.
On Sunday morning from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon, there will be a Candidate Forum for potential candidates for office. Any Democrat running for office in St. Johns County is eligible to attend this forum at no cost. In a separate room, local artists and authors will display and offer for sale: books, photography, paintings and art work with an environmental theme.
There will be about 30 informational and product vendors outdoors. Some will offer family-friendly entertainment, live music, face-painting and non-helium balloon art. Docents from the Whitney Lab will bring their "Traveling Zoo", which is fascinating for children of all ages. Marineland will have sea life artifacts on display and present information about their summer program for kids. There will be bee hives and honey, books and information about bats, recycling information, pottery, jewelry, and much, much more.
Food and drinks will be available for sale throughout the day.
