Issue: 27 April 2016

On April 15, 2016 at 7:30 PM, San Diego State's top orchestral and premier wind ensembles join forces with the 120-voice chamber and concert choirs on the stage at the Jacobs Music Center at Copley Symphony Hall to present a mega-concert experience. Downtown features more than 250 musicians performing works by Wagner, Vaughan Williams, and Beethoven from the School of Music and Dance, this is a program that Jim Chute of UT San Diego called a "powerhouse."

If you have not already purchased a ticket to Downtown, I ask you to buy one today. Tickets are available online at SanDiegoSymphony.org and at the Symphony box office. The proceeds from Downtown will support scholarships for music education students at SDSU. With school districts in San Diego offering arts curriculum once again, music educators are in high demand and at SDSU we are in a race to prepare future music teachers to meet the growing demand.

We are grateful to the San Diego Symphony for their partnership in helping SDSU to perform in their historic and iconic venue. Together, SDSU and the Symphony are committed to music education and outreach in San Diego County. In the audience on April 15 will be more than 300 middle and high school students from county-wide music programs; all of these tickets, as well as transportation to and from the concert, have been generously underwritten by donors.

In San Diego County, more than 65% of all music teachers working in K-12 public schools are SDSU music education alumni. The Music Education program at San Diego State prepares students for careers as music teachers through curriculum and an award-winning year-long fellowship model. Music education fellows work in partnership with credentialed teachers to increase their confidence in the classroom, and at the same time provide area schools with additional trained music educators. Last year, these music education fellows taught music to more than 10,000 K-12 students in San Diego County.

Your ticket purchase supports scholarships for music education fellows and directly impacts arts education in K-12 schools in San Diego County.

Thank you for your support of music education in San Diego County, and I hope to see you on April 15 at Downtown.

Best,

Joyce M. Gattas, Dean
