What Are You Doing For Spring Break?
spring-word-flowers.jpg
Once again, we sent our reporters into the field to speak with some of our students and staff members about their plans for Spring Break. The responses varied from trips to the beach, visiting family and the standard teenage answer of "nothing".  Please click on the video to see what Brookville students and staff had to say.

When It Isn't a Drill
Safety Measures Tested
On March 14th at approximately 1:45 p.m. the alerts went out. The serious threat of a tornado was approaching Brookville Schools. This wasn't a staged drill, this was the real deal. Students and staff were instructed to move to the designated safe areas of the building. At that moment whether it is a violent intruder, a fire or some other serious threat to safety all the time spent practicing needs to bear results.

Fortunately for the children of Brookville, the storm turned north just as it approached the schools. While we are genuinely sorry for the loss of property to homes and farms in our area, we are glad there were no serious injuries or loss of life. We were also pleased to see our students and staff react in quick, decisive fashion in following our tornado safety plan. No one was hurt, no one panicked, everyone did as planned. We were appreciative of immediate and continued communication with the Brookville Fire and Police Departments keeping us abreast of the storm's path.

Safety drills always have been, and will continue to be, a part of our school's culture. This March afternoon in 2016 will be remembered as a successful implementation of all the planning. We encourage parents to stress to their children to take drills seriously and help us always be prepared. You can see pictures here and video from that day on our YouTube channel, here.
Future Farmers of America at BHS
A Week of Celebration, a Banquet and Helping Others
February and March have busy months for students in the Brookville FFA program. We are hitting on the highlights of some activities, which started February 22nd with National FFA Week. During that week, students participated in a variety of activities celebrating their passion for studying agriculture. Tractors made their way to the BHS parking lot and FFA members were seen on the sidewalks participating in mini-tractor races.

The next event was the infamous FFA Banquet, which was held Saturday, March 12. FFA members, their families and guest were treated to an outstanding meal. This banquet is known as one of the best meals one can sit down to. The traditional pulled pork donated from Dull Homestead was a succulent main course. Mr. Mark Porter and the Brookville Schools Nutrition Team did a wonderful job of preparing the side dishes.  A number of others provided donations to make this meal possible.

Following dinner, for the seventh year in a row the awards program began with a dessert auction. This auction includes numerous outstanding desserts that have been donated by some of Brookville's best cooks. Top dollar is always bid for a donated blackberry pie from Jeff & Melissa Van Brederode of the Brookville Grille. This year, under the calling expertise of auctioneer Mr. Andy Korb the auction brought in $800. The proceeds from this event help defer the cost of FFA Camp for students in the coming summer.

Throughout the remainder of the evening FFA members received recognition for this year's many accomplishments.  An Honorary Chapter Degree was bestowed upon Brookville Schools Student Activities Director Mr. Mike Lindsey.  As always, this was an outstanding program that finished with next year's FFA officers being introduced.

Finally, to wrap up the month of March, the FFA program hosted a blood drive . Last Wednesday, the high school gym was home base to students, staff and community members being donors of a precious supply of blood for availability when needed.

We congratulate Mrs. Davis as the advisor and all those in FFA. As an organization, February and March were certainly busy and productive months.  Please take a peek here at a gallery of pictures from these activities.
Blue Devil Athletics
Spring sports season is underway
This week marks the beginning of our spring athletic seasons. BHS students will participate in boys and girls track, boys tennis, baseball and softball. At the intermediate school, students will participate in boys and girls track and softball.

Season openers this weekend were in track at Troy High School and baseball with a home doubleheader against Ponitz (you can find a video montage on our YouTube channel, here). The softball team opens today in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The tennis team will open Monday, April 4 at Dixie. Head coaches for the spring include:  John Barrera, track; Greg Pigg, tennis; Scott Broerman, baseball; Doug Orange, softball; Robert Hope, BIS track; Teresa Huelskamp, BIS softball.

Spring sports present one of our greatest challenges in communicating with parents and spectators do to inclement weather affecting competition regularly. We encourage parents to look for information from coaches on how schedule changes will be communicated. Dependent on the timing of rain storms, etc. the schools will also attempt to keep websites up to date on any change of scheduled events. You can view the spring sports' schedules on our website here.

As students and coaches return to the buildings after spring break, future Blue Connector editions will have more detailed stories on our spring teams and athletes. You can view our sports gallery housed on our website here.
Jump Rope for Heart
BES Participates in Annual Event and Makes a Difference
On March 18th, elementary students participated in the annual Jump Rope for Heart event spearheaded by Phys. Ed. teacher, Mr. Alan Arnett. In speaking with Mr. Arnett, he relayed that this is the 14th year BES has participated in this awareness event.

Students in grades K-4 collect donations from family and friends. In addition, grades K-3 also have a "Penny War". Those grades are challenged to see which one can collect the most pennies. The winning grade is treated to a movie and popcorn after Spring Break. This year's winners were the first grade students with a total of $480 in pennies collected.

Jump Rope for Heart 2016
On the day of the event, the students participate in multiple activities at stations set up in the gym. Some of the activities include a vertical jump, jumping over a bar and of course, jumping rope! You can also view a gallery of photos housed on the BES webpage here.

Our elementary students work hard every year collecting donations for the American Heart Association . Mr. Arnett reports that this is the biggest year of donations since 2007, with a total of $11,900 collected for 2016. Mr. Arnett and the students at Brookville Elementary should be commended for their efforts to make a difference and to help the American Heart Association. Take a moment to check out the High Five section below for some special recognition regarding this event.

Staff Spotlight
Mr. Avila-John
We would like to introduce you to Mr. Nico Avila-John, one of our intermediate school teachers. The Staff Spotlight is a regular feature in the Blue Connector and is designed to assist you in getting to know our teachers and staff. Please take a moment to learn a little bit about Mr. Avila-John and what he does at BIS.

Where is your hometown?
Bellbrook, Ohio

Where do you live now?
I live in Dayton, Ohio.

How many years of teaching experience do you have?
I have one year of substitute teaching and about eight months of full time teaching experience under my belt.

How many years have you taught in Brookville?
This is will be my first full year teaching in Brookville.

What is your position in the school district?
I am the 7th grade Language Arts Blue teacher. I am also an assistant coach for the high school track team.

Tell us about your family and hobbies outside of teaching?
I am a triplet, so I have two brothers who are the same age as me. One of my brothers is an accountant and the other is in graduate school for drug rehabilitation counseling. My dad is an author and retired communication professor at Wright State University. My mom is a Program Manager for the Intensive English Program at the University of Dayton. I also have two adopted "brothers", (Toby and Cyrus) who live with my parents. They enjoy going on walks, sleeping on the couch and barking at loud noises.

I have many hobbies outside of school. I enjoy crafting, hiking, playing any kind of sport with my friends, and pretty much anything else that keeps me active.

What is your favorite thing about teaching in Brookville?
The thing I love most about Brookville is how tight-knit of a community it is. My favorite thing about where I went to school was how close, warm and welcoming the entire community was, and I see that a lot here in Brookville.

I also love how supportive the school community has been to me during my first year of teaching.

How do you spend June and July?
60% relaxing and enjoying the summer.
40% preparing myself to be a better teacher for the next year.

Where Are They Now?
Brookville Schools are proud of our series "Where Are They Now", which features profiles of past Brookville High School graduates. These graduates have responded to brief questions concerning their education or training after high school, their current occupation and their words of wisdom to the students in our buildings.

For Spring Break, this series is taking a brief hiatus. Our next profile will be back in the next edition which comes out on April 11, 2016. You can view our prior profiles on our website.
Keepers of the Castle
Area, Perimeter, Surface Area and Volume?
When most of us think of building a castle our minds go to sand castles on the beach. However, BIS sixth graders recently built cardboard castles as a learning experience in math class. Math teacher Mr. Tyler Bey introduced the project to students as an authentic real world application of finding area, perimeter, surface area, and volume.

Posed with the question of what to build, the experience started with students working in groups to select their end product. Then, given a certain set of criteria, the young architects made blueprints and scale drawings of their castles. At that point the math kicked in. Calculations for finding the area, surface area, perimeter and volume of selected aspects of their blueprint became a part of the instruction and learning.

Mr. Bey commented that, "my students were really excited about the castles. They loved building something that they came up with as a group rather than being told what to build." Once completed, the castles were displayed in the school library and we are excited to share some of them with you in the gallery here.
