Lately, I've heard many people relate stories of loved ones whose health is impaired or compromised. This experience has many people wondering "why". Years ago Rabbi Harold Kushner wrote a now-famous book called When Bad Things Happen To Good People, a spiritually insightful view of how, try as we might, we cannot avoid all the unfortunate things in life including sickness, or understand why it happens. Grappling with illness, our own, or others, is a key part of the mission at Jewish Family and Children's Service of Minneapolis. "Easing suffering" is found in our mission statement.
Learning to live each day with hope, inspiration, appreciation for the moment we're in, and understanding for the journeys we are on is also found at JFCS. Thanks to the generosity of the Women's Endowment Fund, a designated fund of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation's Jewish Community Foundation,
JFCS in partnership with Pathways, will again offer a 9-week program beginning in April called Renewing Lifeā¢. This therapeutic program is designed for people, or those supporting or caregiving people experiencing chronic disease or life-threatening illnesses. Skilled and trained facilitators sensitively lead participating group members through a process to help each person face life, health and illness with renewed energy and hope. JFCS and Pathways offered this program for the first time last April. The feedback was so positive that we eagerly looked for a way to bring it back.
To learn more, please contact Lead Facilitator Betsy Michel, R.N. at 612-251-3561 or [email protected].
This month, we officially welcome Lee Friedman as COO of JFCS. Lee's background, experience and passion for the JFCS mission strengthens the organization's ability to be increasingly strategic, accountable, and outcomes-focused. We are proud to add Lee to our leadership team, and look forward to the work he will do to advance the organization toward accomplishment of our strategic goals with focus and compassion.
With best wishes for a good and healthy year to all,
Judy Halper
Chief Executive Officer

IT'S OFFICIAL: JFCS has been certified as a #ServiceEnterprise!

A short year ago, JFCS Community Involvement Manager, Deb Savitt was at the beginning of a journey, trying to conceive of how to keep the JFCS Volunteer Resources "iceberg" afloat and feeling a bit overwhelmed by the process. Today we are proud and honored to announce that JFCS has been recognized by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise, one of the few organizations in our state to carry this title.
A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers a

What does it mean to be normal?
|
What does it mean to be normal? For Jenny it was going to work, driving, paying bills, hanging out with friends. Six years ago Jenny had independence, security, and confidence. But in a blink of an eye that was all taken away from her when she woke up in the hospital after a car accident and was told she had a serious brain injury. At the time, the doctors did not know how it would affect her, but knew it would take time for her to heal.

Think back over the past 5 months. Ha
s there been an event or opportunity that you wished you participated in, and what was it?
Maybe you can relate to one of these two examples: You are watching
Keeping Up with the Kardashians
and suddenly wished you had a lavish lifestyle just like the reality stars. Now, you begin to feel terrible about the job you are in and the money that you do not have.
