Wholly Men: The Heart and Soul of Living and Leading Well- Men's Retreat 2016

Trinity Institute 2016: Listen for A Change: Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice
This year's Trinity Institute from Trinity Church Wall Street in New York City will be broadcast in the Diocese of Chicago at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman Ave. in Evanston.

The event, to be held from January 21-23, includes speakers Nicholas Kristof, Anna Deavere Smith, Michele Norris, an opening Eucharist with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry as preacher.

St. Mark's continues its commitment to our community through its many social justice and outreach activities. Following are ways in which you can get involved with the St. Mark's community in helping to create a better world.

CPR/AED Training with Evanston Heart Safe Community Project-
On February 14 from 10 am - 3 pm, St. Mark's will be a host site for the Evanston Heart Safe Community Project sponsored by the American Heart Association. This event is committed to equipping every Evanston resident with the basic skills of CPR for infants, children, and adults and the knowledge to operate an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator). It is free to attend, and you can register the day of the event or by going online here

Midweek Lunch: Volunteers Needed
There are two weekly opportunities to serve our neighbors who struggle with hunger and homelessness. We pack lunches every Tuesday night at St. Mark's from 6:00-6:30 p.m., and then serve the lunches every Wednesday at St. Mark's. Volunteers to serve Wednesday lunch are asked to arrive by 10:30 a.m. and stay until 1:00 p.m. We have now starting serving hot soup in addition to the sandwiches, and have also started using all compostable products! There are many ways for you to help. You can make this commitment to fit your schedule: weekly, monthly, or every once in a while!

Vision Keeper 2016-
Every year Interfaith Action of Evanston holds its annual fundraiser in February and gives each faith community an opportunity to come together and celebrate common bonds of faith and service. At the dinner, each congregation honors an individual or a group as its Vision Keeper, a person or team who embodies values that positively impact both the faith community and the larger community. St. Mark's 2016 Vision Keeper is John Lucadamo for his vision to create St. Mark's lunch program and his ongoing dedication to the ministry. We hope you will join St. Mark's at the Vision Keepers Dinner on Sunday, February 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Orrington Hotel. Please RSVP to Pastor Debra by February 10 (

The Friendly Beast Christmas Collection
Remember the coins that our children collected in the weeks leading up to Christmas? Remember the noisy collection that concluded the 4 p.m. worship on Christmas Eve? Well, we are delighted to report that the collection resulted in $381.30 raised for Episcopal Relief and Development which allowed us to "buy" a goat, a pig, a flock of chickens and part of a cow to help families in developing countries. That's a whole lot of Friendly Beasts! Thank you!
The Effects of State and Local Budget Cuts on Homelessness-
A panel discussion of state, county and local goals and responsibility to provide shelter and services to our homeless neighbors will be moderated by The Rev. Daniel Ruen in Interfaith Action of Evanston's Winter Gathering to be held at Bethany Baptist Church of Christ (1225 Elmwood Avenue, Evanston) on Sunday, January 31 at 3 p.m. Panelists will include Daniel Biss, Robyn Gabel and Larry Suffredin. The Annual Meeting of St. Mark's Church
will take place this Sunday, January 24, 2016. There will be only one worship service that day at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting will take place immediately following. Childcare will be provided (along with a movie and snacks) for children so that all may attend the meeting. What can you expect at the Annual Meeting? A celebration of 2015! A vision for 2016 along with the presentation of the budget (2016) and financial report (2015)! And elections to the following positions:
- Doug Sondgeroth, Junior Warden (Feb. 2016 - Jan. 2018); Senior Warden (Feb. 2018 - Jan. 2020)
- Anne Heinz, Luke Urbanowski, Alison Walsh, each for a three year term (Feb. 2016 - Jan. 2019)
- Convention Delegates: 3 as delegates and 3 as alternates to the 2016 Diocesan Convention. The dates of the convention are November 18-19 at The Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, Illinois. Men's Group-
The men of St. Mark's will meet for their 5th Saturday breakfast at Walker Brothers on Green Bay Road on Saturday, January 30 at 7:30 AM. If you have any questions, please call Bruce Gaede, 847-274-0541.

This year's choir fundraiser will take place in the church parlor at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, February the 6th. It will last about an hour and a half. Everyone is encouraged to attend. Bring your friends! The suggested donation is $20 per person, with children free. Dessert and drinks, including wine and non-alcoholic beverages, will be served.
For entertainment all assembled will sing a few old-time hymns and then read aloud from Mark Twain's The Diary of Adam and Eve. This piece, both humorous and sweet, is a salute to women. Men don't fare so well. The Garden of Eden has become Niagara Falls and its environs.

We will be hosting another free Community Movie Night on Feb. 20th at 7 pm! This time, the movie will be "Inside Out" (rated PG). Click to sign up to volunteer the night of the event, or there will be a paper sign up in the parlor during coffee hour. There is one additional way to volunteer this time: put up flyers! We want as many of our neighbors as possible to know they are invited. You can stop by the parlor to pick up flyers and choose a couple of locations with known community bulletin boards (or even better - think of places not on the list). There was a great turn out at December's movie night, and we hope you can come and enjoy a free movie, eat popcorn, and get to know our neighbors! While we have been diligent in shoveling and salting the walkways to and around St. Mark's, please do remember that with fluctuations in temperature, icy patches can appear despite our best efforts. Please use great care when driving and walking. And, if you notice a particularly icy area, please notify an usher on Sunday or, during the week, let a staff member know.

The Niles Metropolitan Chorus is seeking singers to participate in their performance of Mozart's Requiem with the Musica Lumina Orchestra on March 20th, 2016. Rehearsals will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at St. John Brebeuf, 8307 N. Harlem in Niles. For more information, call 702-806-8421.
Brent House, the Episcopal campus ministry at University of Chicago, will be hosting a fabulous event, a night of early 20th Century jazz, on Friday, February 5, 2016 from 6-10 pm. We'll be transforming our space into an old-school jazz club! Enjoy a night of music and fun with tunes from the 20's, 30's, and 40's, with light refreshments and a silent auction. Come dolled up for the era, if you like. We'll be dressed to the nines! Join all the hep cats and frails!

Evanston Creative Writing Meetup
If you like to write and want a supportive environment in which to write, join us! Each week, a member volunteers to provide writing prompts to spark our creativity (a first line, an object, a picture, a situation). For about 10-15 minutes we write and, if
 we feel like sharing, we read our creation aloud. This is not a critique group - only positive feedback is encouraged. We usually fit in 3 - 4 prompts per session. Members range from young adults to octogenarians. You don't have to be a professional (or even a serious) writer to participate. The group meets on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the Old Library at St. Mark's. For more information, go to

Evanston English Country Dance Group
This group meets every other Wednesday in Cunningham Hall. All dances are taught and prompted. We learn English Country dances devised from pre-1650 to the present. Jane Austin would recognize much of the dancing we do. Once a month, we have live music performed by Putting on Aires; the other Wednesdays, the music is from an extensive CD collection. You are welcome to come with or without a partner. Wear comfortable shoes (the type you would use to walk a mile) and casual clothing. Tai Chi Chuan is an ancient Chinese martial art that promotes well-being by circulating the chi of the body through a series of slow, relaxing movements. The Human Process teaches the Yangstyle short form each Saturday morning at St. Mark's. Practicing Tai Chi helps replenish energy reserves, improves balance, loosens tight muscles and brings more flexibility to joints and ligaments. It is a cardiovascular and weight-bearing exercise. is an ongoing support group for those who have experienced the death of a spouse or life partner. This free group meets at NorthShore Hospice, 4901 Searle Parkway, Skokie on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
