Washington County wins award
Washington County's Leah Schrodt accepts Green Business Award on behalf of all green county programs.
Every day, Washington County divisions and department programs provide services to over 500,000 constituents across more than 700 square miles of territory. The County recognizes the role and responsibility of public agencies creating a healthy and productive organization by protecting, using and conserving natural and financial resources effectively and efficiently. The County was recently awarded the Green Business Award for establishing programs that ensure the sustainable use of public resources.

The County's sustainability efforts are guided by long-term planning at the agency level. Programs and efforts are implemented by County departments and staff who are dedicated to advancing sustainability in day-to-day operations.

Examples of efforts include:
  • A collection program for plastic stretch film, Styrofoam, batteries and rigid plastics.
  • A campaign that encourages employees to turn off electronic devices during the evenings and weekends to help cut the County's electricity use.
  • The County's fleet automotive shop and grounds maintenance programs achieving EcoBiz certification.
  • A collection program for food scraps generated by food vendors at the Washington County Fair.
  • Installation of a 65 kilowatt, thin-film solar array on the County's Charles D. Cameron Public Services Building that provides green power.
  • An office supply reuse program to keep materials in use and reduce buying new items.
  • An employee suggestion program aimed at supporting broader ownership in improving County operations.
  • Distribution of free TriMet passes to employees to promote alternative transportation options.

The County's Sustainability Program has developed an expanded definition of internal sustainability that encompasses the triple bottom line. This three-part approach ensures that all aspects of sustainability -- environment, economy and equity -- are included in the County's business operations.

In addition to what happens internally at Washington County, the County also coordinates and is a founding member of the Partners for a Sustainable Washington County Community (PSWCC). PSWCC is comprised of 11 organizations. Their goal is to improve and promote sustainable practices within those organizations through networking, training, collaboration and
resource sharing.

Washington County believes that sustainability actions must produce measurable results, provide long-term benefits and improve efficiency of operations. Washington County's Sustainability Program reports progress toward its objectives regularly. To view annual presentations, policies, reports or plans, please visit the Sustainability Program website.
