These Myths May Be Holding You Back from Unschooling Your Children - Here's Why They Shouldn't
|
I stood up to walk away from the makeshift office space in my bedroom; it was time for a well-earned break from work. I'd been editing a client's website copy all morning, and my eyes were beginning to blur words in protest.
As I walked toward the kitchen, I felt my mouth widen to a smile as I heard my daughters giggling in the sunroom - their makeshift office space. They were both lying on their bellies, with their long brown legs stretched along the carpeted floor, and their energies deep in research and conversation.
Marley (age 11) and Sage (age 9) were happily engaged in their studies, flanked by their usual tools: a laptop, an iPad, two notebooks, several sheets of paper, empty mugs formerly filled with mint tea, and a copy of The Last Olympian, the final book in Rick Riordan's wildly popular Percy Jackson series.

Judy Yero: A Challenge...
|
During World War II, several branches of the U.S. military used a variation on the
following slogan: "The difficult we do immediately. The impossible takes a little longer."
Some may say that what I am asking is impossible, but given the collective wisdom,
passion, and experience of this group, I refuse to believe that. So here's the story.
The Challenge
AERO's mission is to help create an education revolution to make learner-centered education available to everyone.
A little background: I have a client who is interested in advancing the cause of learner-centered education. I reported back to him after the AERO conference in May, and he has asked me to take on a larger task-traveling around the country visiting various types of learner-centered facilities. To that end, I've been reviewing the information on AERO member schools, as well as other progressive/democratic/alt-ed efforts. One thing has become painfully clear.

First AERO Member Videos Now Posted!
|
Last week we announced that AERO will now have videos of its schools on our member site! We invited member schools and programs to send in their favorite video link for us to post by their name, and these are the first ones that came in, that we've now linked to their site on our member list:
These videos give potential parents, teachers and students a glimpse into our schools and programs.

Playground Grants Now Available!
|
Ed: The people from KaBOOM! contacted us about grants they have available to create playgrounds in your communities. Here's the information:
KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids - particularly those growing up in poverty in America - the childhood they deserve filled with balanced and active play so they can thrive. We believe that the well-being of a society begins with the well-being of children, and in pursuit of our mission to make sure every child has the opportunity for active and balanced play we offer our Build it With KaBOOM! grant.
Build it With KaBOOM! offers communities the chance to come together and build a playground for their community. Through the relationship KaBOOM! has with funding partners we get opportunities to build playgrounds all over the United States, Canada, and Mexico. If you want to learn more about our grant, feel free to visit our website at kaboom.org. To start an application, you can do so online at apply.kaboom.org. You can reach out to Elizabeth Cole at [email protected] for more information on our current opportunities available."
