Zero Waste Program's Dynamic AmeriCorps Trio
Our AmeriCorps members, Andrea Reany, Tyler Bonner and Luke Black wrapped up their term in August. During what was Reany's second and final term and Bonner and Black's first term with the zero waste program, they helped start and implement the zero waste pledge program, expand zero waste event services, win crucial grants that aid us in our cleanups and raise our presence in the community.
Although different circumstances led them to the zero waste program, they all had the innate passion for the environment and for serving their community.
Reany, from Toledo, showed her enthusiasm for a cleaner environment when she spent summers cleaning up trash in a drainage stream in the center of town as a young girl, Bonner, from Athens, learned from naturalist friends and family to care about surrounding natural beauty from an early age, and Black learned to fix things without wasting as a computer repair technician for years at Ohio University.

Celebrating Recycling in Ohio
Recyclers across Ohio will gather at Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center in Oregon, OH on October 20-21 to partake in the 2014 Joint Conference to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Association of Ohio Recyclers (AOR). AOR and the Buckeye Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) are hosting the event.
"This really is the premier Ohio recycling conference in 2014 with AOR and Buckeye SWANA partnering to offer an action-packed agenda. Anyone with ties to recycling in Ohio should consider attending," says Michelle Balz, Vice President of AOR.
Participants will be able to develop professional skills, gain networking opportunities, and hear from experts on a variety of topics including organics, zero waste, plastics recycling, and the changing waste stream.

Cooper Collects Over 50,000 Tires
It's not hard to realize what a special place Southeast Ohio is. This could explain why, after moving from Dayton, Ohio to Athens in 1975, Mike Cooper has yet to move away. He first came to Athens to study pre-forestry at Ohio University and immediately "fell in love with Athens."
His love of Athens and Southeast Ohio in general is exemplified through his work. Mike is currently a Health Sanitarian at Athens City-County Health Department where, for the past four years, he's addressed the issues of illegal dumping in the surrounding area.
"The ultimate goal is to discourage illegal open dumping," he said. "We try to approach that through education and if that doesn't work, the next step is enforcement."

Welcome to the Team, Heather!
We are excited to welcome Heather Fuston to the zero waste team! Heather will work as an AmeriCorps member and her focus will be education and outreach programs.
For three years, Heather worked as a preschool teacher until her most recent job as a marketing team member at Snowville Creamery. On top of her various jobs, Heather has always been heavily involved in volunteer work.
Being an AmeriCorps member at Rural Action only seems like the next natural step for Heather because volunteering is such an important part of her life.
"I chose to join Americorps and the Zero Waste program because I wanted an opportunity to use my energy to make a lasting impact on my community and build new skills and relationships in the process. I am so grateful," Heather said.
