Next Steps into Adulthood Session 1
“What is Adulthood?”

Tuesday, October 20th, 5:30-8:00 PM

(Light dinner will be provided at 5:30 with program beginning promptly at 6 PM)

About this session:

For individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those who support them, preparing for adulthood involves decisions that affect every aspect of life. This first workshop in a series of seven will provide an overall introduction to some of the considerations of entering adulthood for men and women on the spectrum and for their families. We will define “adulthood”, discuss concepts of independence, responsibility, and self-advocacy and hear from presenters about supports.  Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from presenters, ask questions, and participate in breakout activities.

Presenters will include:

Anthony Rostain, MD, MA
Director of Education, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania Health System
Dr. Rostain’s practice focuses on “lifetime neurodevelopmental psychiatry”, treating patients of all ages with ADHD, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, learning disabilities and social communications disorders. Dr. Rostain is an attending psychiatrist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and at Penn Behavioral Health of the University of Pennsylvania Health System. He is Co-Director of the Adult ADHD Treatment and Research Program and the Adult Social Learning Disorders Program and is Director of CHOP’s Developmental Neuropsychiatry Program.

Marnisha Henry, MHS
Mentor, Educator, Life Coach
For the past 23 years Ms. Henry has worked for JEVS Human Services, she served as program director of the Philadelphia Independence Network (PIN) for the past five years, until leaving that position to further her doctoral studies, focusing on young adults with disabilities. Marnisha utilizes a “holistic” approach in supporting young adults, meeting them where they are.  Marnisha firmly believes that the barriers faced by people with disabilities in a social context is less related to their disability, and more to the social expectations and exclusions imposed by society.
