Host Families Needed

Garces is looking for host families for a few new students attending Garces Memorial for the 2nd semester. In exchange for a private room, board, and transportation, there is a nice monthly stipend given. Are you interested in opening your heart and home to a student at the beginning of January? If so, please see the attached flyers with the contact information.  We are looking to get the placement made before the holidays. Garces uses two companies for placement of our international students - AmeriStudent and My American Year. Please review the flyers and contact the homestay agencies if you are interested.

School Wide Community Service Project
CHRISTMAS ON CAMPUS
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19TH

Toy Drive
Garces Memorial will once again collect toys for needy families to distribute on Saturday, December 19th during our Christmas on Campus event.  Families are identified through the Mercy Center and invited to our campus to spend the morning celebrating Christmas.  It is a joyful event where children work on Christmas craft projects, sing Christmas carols, enjoy a magic show, play Christmas themed games, and visit with Santa.  Every child receives a present.  We ask students to bring wrapped presents for girls and boys ages 2 through teen to their Theology classes.  Please note on the outside of the wrapped present the age and gender.

Extra Toys
Ever wonder what we do with the toys that are leftover from Christmas on Campus?  This year any extra toys will be equally donated to Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul. We hope to be able to supply both charities with enough toys to truly make a difference and have asked each student to consider donating two toys this year.
School Wide Community Service Project
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Pope Francis Build
Salazar Family

It is time for our Garces students to put hammer to nail! Garces raised over $5000 to help the Salazar family and Habitat for Humanity make the dream of home ownership a reality.  The following dates are the schedule for building at the worksite.  The address is 415 Rios St. (near Union Ave and Wilson Rd.). Students must sign-up with Mr. Geissel to work at the site so there is a manageable number of workers for each day.  Students must be over 16 years old and wear closed toe shoes and have a Habitat for Humanity Waiver (if under 18) signed by a parent.  It is a great way to earn community service hours and watch a home come together for a great family.

Message from
Debra Sakowski
Asst. Principal for Academic Affairs

Andy Williams' song "It's the Most Wonderful Time  of the Year" seems  to set the mood for the Christmas season. Once I hear it played on the radio, I begin making lists...lists and more lists.  As my lists grow, my stress level grows exponentially and I find myself feeling a bit "frazzled". Our students feel the same stress and anxiety, regarding the holidays,  as we do but add to their list ...finals!  They now begin feeling a bit like  "Mr. Grinch" and Scrooge!  In an effort to help reduce students' stress level, we have scheduled finals, as usual, to reduce the number of classes students attend each day and allow time for them to attend study sessions and prepare for their next exam.  The schedule for final exams is as follows:

Tuesday, Dec.15th.
Periods- 1 & 3
Wednesday   Dec. 16th Periods 2 & 4
Thursday Dec. 17th.
Periods 5 & 7
Friday. Dec. 18th
Period 6

Seniors with a 93% and above in a class have been notified of their option to "Opt Out" of a final. If you want to confirm that your senior student is "Opting Out" of a final, please contact me.

Students first semester grades may be viewed on net classroom on January 5, 2016 and report cards will be sent home by mid-January. Semester grades determine eligibility for athletics and extra-curricular activities.  Eligibility will be declared on January 11th and I will notify students who are ineligible. A letter will then be mailed home to the student's parents. Again, please contact me if you have any questions.

In closing, as we approach the year 2016 , on behalf of all of us at Garces, I'd like to wish you and your families a Blessed  Christmas and Happy New Year.
