Free-standing EDs: Access or Just Excess?

One relatively new facility type that's spreading like wildfire is the Free-standing Emergency Department (ED). Colorado now has more than 20 Free-standing EDs - all built within the last two years. You could make the argument that their location in highly populated suburban neighborhoods could be beneficial, however the CO APCD shows us that the majority of the top ten reasons people visited a Free-standing ED in 2014 were for non-emergent issues.

Patients Can Self-Administer IV Antibiotics at Home: Study

Patients can be taught to safely self-administer long-term intravenous antibiotics at home, without the help of a health care worker, a new study suggests. The finding could have a significant impact on uninsured patients who might otherwise spend weeks in a hospital receiving IV care.

Doctors Prescribe Old-Fashioned House Calls When Treating the Old and Frail

48 million Americans live in food-insecure households, according to Feeding America. In 2014, hunger and food insecurity drove up U.S. health expenditures by $160 billion, an amount equal to one-third of the national debt, according to a recent study. Food insecurity is associated with higher rates of depression, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, osteoporosis and other conditions.

Saving Lives and Saving Money: Hospital-Acquired Conditions Update Interim Data From National Efforts To Make Care Safer, 2010-2014
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has released the updated report on the progress made under the Partnership for Patients effort to reduce hospital acquired infections. This document provides preliminary estimates for 2014 on hospital-acquired conditions (HACs), indicating a 17 percent decline, from 145 to 121 HACs per 1,000 discharges, from 2010 to 2014.
