Raiders owner Mark Davis must have flunked history. His father moved the Raiders to Los Angeles, which kicked them back to Oakland. Now Mark wants to try it again, forgetting that L.A. or its environs do not tolerate losers. After 13 straight non-winning seasons, the Raiders are, indeed, losers. And so to Mark: Just win first, baby.
The best local sport story of 2015: The Warriors winning the NBA title, of course. The second best story: The firing of Jim Harbaugh, the dumbest sports decision in decades. Choose an average general manager over a winning coach? Idiotic. As the University of Michigan soars, the 49ers are plummeting, and their fans are trying to bail. Fans often are smarter than owners.
Good luck to Jared Goff, the Cal junior quarterback who's off to the NFL. But his leaving is yet another blow to the fading concept of the true student-athlete. That's why I'll always appreciate Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan more. He stayed four years, and that means more to the purists than how well he does in the pros.
Stanford's Christian McCaffrey deserved the Heisman Trophy over Alabama's Derrick Henry. College football hasn't seen a football player like McCaffrey ever. Stanford coach David Shaw put it best after the Rose Bowl win over Iowa: The country hardly saw McCaffrey because of the all those night games in the Pac-12. Its commissioner, Larry Scott, cost McCaffrey the Heisman.
Would all the screaming public address announcers please shut up? Your shouting does nothing to help your teams win games. The Warriors won the championship without you.
I said last season that Stephen Curry is the best shooter I've ever seen. Turning his back on a made 3-pointer is the final proof.
The best player I've seen? Sorry, Michael Jordan, but Bill Russell is, hands down, the greatest. Nobody won more college and pro championships over the course of one career.
The Giants made off-season moves, while the A's made no moves of consequence. Well, with Billy Beane's water bill, the club is short on finances.
All the bleeding hearts who think Barry Bonds belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame because of his accomplishments prior to his taking steroids, overlooking that he clearly cheated the game. A cheater is a cheater is a cheater, and shouldn't be rewarded for cheating.
Speaking of Cooperstown, it's a crying shame that Steve Garvey hasn't been inducted. His records and awards surpass any number of inductees. It's a clear case of the voters disliking him, even though he played the game cleanly.
Roger Goodell makes $44 million a year, which is creative financing at its best since he demonstrates no power as NFL commissioner.
The 49ers kicked out Harbaugh, then they made Colin Kaepernick the fall guy. And so Blaine Gabbert will save the franchise? Bill Walsh must be turning in his grave.
Forty-Niner coach Jim Tomsula seems a nice guy, but he doesn't speak in coherent sentences. How did he get this job anyway? No wonder owner Jed York remained invisible the entire season.
This is what happens when kids who haven't really worked a day in their lives are handed the keys to daddy's kingdom. Jed York meet Mark Davis.
Who's the most unrecognized superstar locally. That's easy: Russell Baze. He's won more races than any jockey in history, but you wouldn't know him walking down the street.
Luke Walton has handled himself so maturely as the Warriors' emergency head coach, you sense that he'll be a fine coach one day elsewhere in the NBA. What's striking: He's just the opposite of his talking-head father, Bill Walton.
Happy New Year to Oakland sports fans. The most abused fans in America, yet the most loyal. You are so much more heroic than the three sports teams which are trying to abandon you.

Raider Fan to Tailgate Legend
It started in August of 1969 as a 10-year-old kid who just moved from the woods of Connecticut to the city of San Leandro, California. There was this team called the Oakland Raiders, with a pirate-like logo all the neighborhood kids talked about. As the new kid I wanted to fit in but as I watched this team and got to go to a game, it was like, "Wow, this is awesome." From that moment on I was a Raider fan.
I was lucky. My next door neighbor had season tickets and I got to go to some games with him in the early 70s. It was quite a different time back then: The players would walk through the parking lot, eating and drinking with fans. Not like today's players.
It was 1976 when the Raiders played the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Championship game and I was there. I was only 18 at the time and it was quite a game. When the Raiders won the stadium went wild, with fans running on the field, tearing down the goal posts, ripping up the grass from the field and throwing chunks into the stands.
The Raiders went on to win their first Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings. I will always remember that day. I attended many more games, partying under the bleachers in the 70s. It was a wild time. I went to as many games as I could until they moved to Los Angeles. It was a sad time for many of us. Al Davis was known as the Oakland Traitor but still I remained a Raiders fan. I only went to a couple games in Los Angeles as I didn't like it down there. Like most of us Bay Area fans watched them on TV.
In 1995 the Raiders came home! It was all out crazy trying to get season tickets from the OFMA (Oakland Football Marketing Association) but somehow we got them. There was so much excitement, that the team was home. People were acting crazy the first few years but the team just couldn't get it together. Then came John Gruden and great players. We became a force, like the old Raiders and made the playoffs. I was 18 when they won their first championship. I was there with my son, Marcus, as they won again as the Oakland Raiders. Not many have had that kind of life experience. My son and I have been here for the last 20 years, starting when he was 3-years-old and now he's 23.
Our tailgate, which started with just 3 guys in 1995, has become the most extreme tailgate in the NFL. At one tailgate we knew the guys next to us and they joined us. The tailgate started to grow, from a small Weber grill and minivan and got bigger. We added a motor home and started to outgrow it. Then came the first trailer.
As it grew, things didn't always go so well so I decided it was time to make a change in the way the tailgate was run. That's when the Tailgaters Barbecue Party was started in 2005. It continued to grow in 2008 when we filmed Diners, Drive Inns and Dives with Guy Fieri. He said, "I'm here in Oakland, with the Bad Boyz of BBQ."
We took that name and as they say, the rest is history. The Bad Boyz of BBQ has become the place to be when tailgating in Oakland. People come from all over the world and the USA to tailgate with the Bad Boyz of BBQ. We are now hosting 200 to 300 fans at every home game and it has become quite the party, with upscale food and a great atmosphere, where everyone is welcome. I'm thankful for all the people that we have met and places we've been over the years. All this because of a team called the Oakland Raiders.
As they say, "Being a Raider fan is a lifestyle, not just something you do on Sunday afternoon."

16th annual MESHOF Induction Ceremony, January 28, 2016

In association with the NFL Alumni and as part of the Super Bowl festivities to be held in the San Francisco Bay Area next year, the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame (MESHOF) will present its 16
th
annual Induction Ceremony at the Double Tree Hotel Newark--Fremont on Thursday, January 28. The ceremony is dedicated to former members of the San Francisco 49ers.
The oldest professional team in the Bay Area, the San Francisco 49ers have also been the area's most successful. This is your chance to meet and mingle with many of the players.
Inducted and honored will be players from the 1950s, '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. Team owners, doctors, and former players who have positively impacted the community will be honored. Also honored will be those who contributed to the organization since the franchise moved to San Francisco in 1946.

2016 Super Bowl Breakfast, Feb. 6

annual NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast is coming to the Bay Area! It will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 8 a.m. at the Hilton Union Square in San Francisco.

The Super Bowl Breakfast features the presentation of the
