JUNE 2016 STAFF READING SUGGESTIONS

GEORGE'S GRAND TOUR
by Caroline Vermalle

A sweet, heartwarming story of 83-year-old George and his elderly neighbor Charles, who decide to live out a dream and follow the Tour de France route in a car trip. George's granddaughter Adele learns of their scheme and forces George to get a cellphone and text her daily. The resulting novel is both funny and poignant. Vermalle has written a beautiful travelogue and lovely story of friendship.

THE GIRLS
by Emma Cline

A thought provoking coming of age story. Evie is looking for a place to be accepted and finds herself drawn into a soon to be infamous cult.  This novel really gets into the mind of a
14-year-old teenage girl.
-Maxwell Gregory

TRIBE: ON HOMECOMING AND BELONGING
by Sebastian Junger

I loved Sebastian Junger's new book. Tribe examines what we can learn from tribal societies about loyalty and belonging and why we are stronger when we come together. Junger emphasizes the problems facing war veterans and offers up an interesting solution.

HOMEGOING
by Yaa Gyasi

A brilliant debut novel set in Ghana and, eventually, America, about two half-sisters and their "branches split from the same tree". Esi is sold into slavery and Effia is married to a British slave trader, living in the castle under which Esi is imprisoned. Each chapter is told by a different descendant of the sisters and leaves you wanting more of each character as their stories play out. The writing is fantastic and I couldn't put it down. DO NOT MISS!

SOFT IN THE HEAD
by Marie-Sabine Roger

A heartwarming, humorous story about 45-year-old Germain, an illiterate, working man who meets 85-year-old Margueritte while sitting on a park bench. The unusual friendship that blossoms celebrates the joy of reading and the power of friendship. A perfect read on a summer's day.

THE GIRLS IN THE GARDEN

Lisa Jewell's new book is the story of dark secrets, a devastating mystery and games both children and adults play. Set in London in a picturesque communal garden square where children run free, fans of domestic thrillers will enjoy this fast paced novel which will leave readers questioning how well they know their neighbors!

SWEETBITTER
by Stephanie Danler

The fictional story of the contemporary lifestyle and romance of the kitchen help from the eyes of the waitstaff of a famous New York restaurant.  Gritty summer read that I highly recommend!
-Diana Wettermann

IF I FORGET YOU
by Thomas Christopher Greene

We've all read this story before; two young lovers forcibly separated that meet again by chance on a New York street 20 years later. What makes this book so special was the beautiful language and the author's way with description of time and place. A twist at the end always helps too! I was captivated from the beginning and read it one day. Don't miss this one by the author of The Headmaster's Wife.

This is a great choice for girls who liked The Secret Hum of a Daisy or The Meaning of Maggie. 11 year old Macy has a birthday just days away, but she doesn't want to turn 12 without her dad there to celebrate. He's been gone for months working on a secret project since being discharged from the Marines. Macy goes in search of her dad, makes a new friend, and discovers that knowing the truth can carry a heavy burden. This is a story about love, loss and new beginnings.
