COLLEGE & CAREER
READINESS PREP at UCF

The newest program in partnership with UCF has us all very excited! We consider this our 'Young Adult Boot Camp' since the program will teach skills necessary to navigate life as a college student or successful young adult in the community.

Participants will meet on the UCF campus one Saturday a month to learn about and experience some of the opportunities and responsibilities that come with entering adulthood and life after high school.

College isn't a fit for everyone, but everyone should at least have the chance to explore the possibility. This program also allows our members to learn about what to expect after high school, what choices they may have and some real life skills that will help them be more self-sufficient, independent and successful in the community.

Fall semester begins Saturday, September 12, 2015
11:15am - 1:15pm
UCF Teaching Academy

The class will be held  one Saturday per month on the following dates: 09/12, 10/17, 11/14, 12/15.

Spring semester begins January 23, 2016
and will continue 02/13, 03/05, 04/09 and 04/23.

The FOUNDATION is proud to offer this exceptional learning opportunity at no cost to you in conjunction with the UCF College of Education and Human Performance and the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute.

The College & Career Prep program is for individuals with varying abilities who are 16 and older. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian while on campus.

BODIES, BOUNDARIES and SEXUALITY
The FOUNDATION has invited Terri Couwenhoven, a well known sex educator and author, to come to Orlando to lead two gender specific workshops to help you and your child  become more comfortable learning and talking about their developing bodies.

By drawing on her unique background as both a teacher and mother of a child with Down syndrome, Ms. Couwenhoven blends factual information and practical ideas for teaching children with unique abilities about their bodies, puberty and sexuality.

MEET BRANDON GRUBER...
Meet Brandon Gruber, 19, of Santa Cruz, CA! He is one of the incredible people our new Program Manager,
Lea Anne Dombek, had the privilege to meet at the National Down Syndrome Congress Convention in June.  She has many GREAT stories from her experience at the summer convention she will be sharing in our upcoming newsletters.

From Lea Anne:

It was the day before the Convention actually started in Phoenix when I had the pleasure of meeting Brandon. He and his parents were setting up a vendor booth to sell his beautiful artwork and note cards.

At first I thought he was a talented artist (and without a doubt, he is a gifted painter), but as I listened to his story, the more I realized how much more he has to give!

Brandon not only embodies the 'I am not my diagnosis' belief, but he also decided to do something to help others believe it, too!

Brandon and his family moved to Santa Cruz, California when he was a Freshman. He was the first student with Down syndrome  at Aptos High School  to be mainstreamed into general education classes. But even after three long years, Brandon still felt isolated and excluded from things. "Inclusion" there, it seemed, did not necessarily mean "being included."

His mother, Teresa, told me that she and his dad were frustrated and ready to pull him from the school altogether, but Brandon had other ideas, she explained, "He just said 'No!'"

"He had decided to stick it out and 'blow up' his Senior year," she said. "He joined clubs and he got involved ... and you know what?"  Her face lit up as she continued,  "H is classmates began to take notice!"

In fact he made such an impact on the
other "typical" students, many of whom also felt isolated and excluded in one way or another, they elected him Homecoming King! And while t his story could end right there, it doesn't.

Brandon had heard that some of the underprivileged kids in his school couldn't afford to go to some of the big school functions, such as a formal dance.  Not wanting them to feel left out, he decided to raise money to help them have the opportunity for a new and inclusive experience they otherwise may not have been able to have.

He created the 321 Life+1 Project to sell his artwork, to raise money  and to raise awareness.  So far, Brandon has paid for 19 students to go the Winter Formal and to Prom...which included prom tickets, dress attire, pictures, flowers, dinner and a limousine!

He also purchased 21 yearbooks for Seniors who had never been able to afford one. He's also given recognition awards to 12 students who've  overcome challenges. Even People Magazine picked up his story in May, calling him the "Prince of the Prom.  " I went crazy when I found out People Magazine wanted to write about me. I called all my friends and told them!" He laughed,"But noooobody believed me!" (They are all believers now!)

At the end of the Convention, I found out that he was receiving the Christian Pueschel Memorial Citizen Award. In his acceptance speech, he told the story of the 321 Life+1 Project and his mission of "...adding to, changing, helping or inspiring one person." He implored each of us to help "just ONE!" I'm not sure who had the biggest smiles on their faces as he stepped down from the podium - Brandon, his parents or every other person in the entire audience!
The last time I saw him was at the 321 Dance after the awards banquet. He wasn't acting like some big hero, a hotshot award winner or a magazine superstar. He was just a regular kid, having a great time, dancing and having fun!

When he's not painting, raising money, modeling, acting or traveling to speaking engagements, he continues to help and inspire...and indeed, he's still having fun.

This just in! Brandon will be featured on the cover of this Fall's Apostrophe Magazine (and  Apostrophe Magazine on Facebook ). It should be out soon!

Find out more about Brandon and his 321Life+1 Project by visiting his website: www.321Life.com.

See his "Heroes Among Us" story in People Magazine Online.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes! I bought several packages of his beautiful cards! And I can hardly wait to see what new designs he has for us at next year's NDSC Convention here in Orlando!
RIDE ON! 2015 BIKE CAMP SUCCESS!
iCan Bike Camp 2015 proved to be a successful and exciting experience once again, as 40 riders and over 140 volunteers took over the North Concourse of the Orange County Convention Center!

The riders, ranging in age from 8 to 32, worked hard each day learning bicycle basics, practicing new skills and gaining confidence to ride. Parents commented that they began to notice positive changes at home due to the feeling of accomplishment and increased self-esteem; a few of the wonderful side benefits of the iCan Bike program.

WESH 2 News came to see the action, too. They put together a delightful piece about Bike Camp! (See their broadcast here.)

Volunteer Mitchell  Perry, 16, summed it up nicely, saying, "It's amazing what one week can do...they're wobbly on the first day, and then on the last day they're all flying around out here!"

Words simply cannot express the gratitude we all have for our phenomenal volunteers. Your endless positivity, incredible energy and epic willingness to give of yourself is truly amazing! You are the ones who make this all possible. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

FOUR-WHEELED FUN at SKATE NIGHT!
Family Skate Night was a great way to end the summer! Approximately 40 families joined The FOUNDATION at Let's Skate Orlando last week.

Music and laughter filled the air as everyone skated and danced the night away. (That is, when we all weren't enjoying delicious PIZZA!)

Let's Skate provided us with invaluable
"Skate Mates," skating helpers made of PVC, which allowed some of the less experienced skaters the ability to roll around the rink on their own.

Representatives from the Agency for Persons with Disabilities were on the scene, assisting our members with sign up. (We highly recommend you register with them, if you haven't already . It only takes a few minutes and could be of great value to your family in the future. Visit their website,  apd.myflorida.com,  for more information.)

All in all, it was an awesome night for
everyone involved, including the terrific volunteers who showed up to help! Thanks!
