MEET SOME OF THE NEW BOARD MEMBERS
OF TEXAS DANCE HALL PRESERVATION, INC.
Nathan Wensowitch
Nathan Wensowitch has always had an appreciation for nostalgia.  Growing up in a small town outside of Dallas, he spent many a Saturday nights in the KJT, SPJST and KC halls of Ennis celebrating his Czech heritage.  Now living in Buda and working in Austin as a Registered Architect, he has the opportunity to live in an area dense with local historic dance halls. Nate received his Masters in Architecture degree, along with a Historic Preservation Certificate from Texas A&M University.  He is also the current Chairman of the Historic Preservation Commission in Buda.  He hopes to apply his nostalgic sense along with his formal training to continue TDHP's mission and vision.  The preservation of both the structures and cultures that make up the historic dance halls are paramount for this generation, as well as those to come.  The same structures that have stood for a 100 years and hosted countless dances, weddings, and celebrations were once the hub of local small communities.  The communal aspect that made these halls come alive with music, dancing and laughter should be given the opportunity to continue in one of its natural environments, the Texas Dance Hall.  Nate looks forward to the preservation of each hall and the folks who make it come alive.

AIRWAY PAVILION HALL
Built in the 1930's, Airway Hall was originally in Wesley, Texas. It was moved to Round Top in the late 1990's to serve as an antique barn during the semi annual Antiques Fair. The hall is named Airway after it's appearance; when the windows are raised, it looks ready for takeoff. A Czech Hall in origin, it was built across the street from the 1st Czech school in Texas, in Veseli or later known as Wesley. The hall is now part of the Stone Cellar property in Round Top and is now known as Airway Hall at The Stone Cellar and hosts public dances and private events.

Greetings from Deb Fleming, TDHP President (since May 2015)

I was honored to step into this leadership role with an organization I have been involved with its inception in 2007, contributing as an active volunteer and passionate advocate of historic halls. Prior to that it was more a hobby and for pure simple entertainment searching out old dance halls, photographing them and collecting stories told by those who frequented them or had memories of days past. It was a familiar experience similar to wandering the back roads of Texas as I did with my family as a kid growing up in the 1950s and 1960s.

There is so much to be done and so little time for many halls that are at great risk today.  Most of these at risk halls are not even on the radar for many Texans due to where they are located or their declining status in their own small communities.  I am excited and encouraged with the wealth of interest, commitment and diverse skills the new Board members bring to TDHP  as we embark on the road ahead looking to 2016 and beyond.  We will be introducing them and a group of advisors to the board over the next few months in our monthly Newsletter so you will get to know them all.

Our 2nd Annual Festival of Texas Fiddling at historic La Bahia Turn Verein on November 7th is a great way to have an authentic Texas Dance Hall experience.   Grab the family, a group of friends or business associates and come see for yourself why we love these halls so much and hope to raise awareness and honor their history and the important place they hold in the landscape of our great State.

Each time a hall is lost, we lose an important part of Texas that can never be replaced!  We lose a part of our ourselves as Texans!
