Year Round

The cool weather has been such a treat!  It definitely feels like fall is around the corner.  But don't despair.  We still have plenty of summer goodness at the market.  Now is your last chance to can or freeze some peaches.  And our berries --- Raspberries, Blackberries, and Strawberries --- are experiencing a drastic decrease in production.  So shop early if you want to grab a box.

We will have tomatoes until the first frost.  So make plenty of batches of spaghetti sauce, and get your fill on tomato pie and tomato salad with fresh basil and mozzarella in the meantime.

We're bringing new apples each week to market.  New varieties this week:   Ambrosia, Shizuka or Candycrisp, and Cortland.  Don't forget we have Kid Size Gala and seedless Grapes which are a perfect addition to any lunch box or after school snack!
We'll see you at Market!

Whatcha Munchin', Abby?
Jonathan Apples!

Abby worked this summer in the packing house, and attends multiple farmers markets throughout the season.  One day, at the 14th & U market, I looked down at the scales where Abby was working and saw a beautiful deep red, shinny apple.  I asked her, "Abby, what are you eating?" because the apple looked like a Jonathan, but we hadn't brought any Jonathan in from the field yet, so I was a little perplexed.  "A Jonathan." she confirmed, "It's my favorite apple.  Caleb and I went out into the orchard and picked some that were ready."

Ahhh.  The perks of the boyfriend working on the farm and knowing where everything is out in the field!  :)

T he majority of the Jonathan crop is now harvested.  The cooler weather has been absolutely ideal for apples.  Apples love sunny days and cold nights.  The apple has better coloring when it is cool in the evenings.  The image on the left is our first picking of Jonathan.  The image on the right is our most recent picking of Jonathan.  Isn't the color difference impressive?

Come & Get It:  Fresh Cider has been pressed!!
We pressed a new batch of cider in time for last weekend's markets. Hopefully you got to try a sample; if not, be sure to taste it this week!

This batch of cider has a light, crisp and tart flavor profile.

The coloring of the cider is dependent on the varieties of apples pressed in the batch.  Think about how an apple browns after cutting; cider oxidizes the same way.  York and Northern Spy apples are two varieties that oxidize rapidly.  Once we start including York and Northern Spy in our cider blend, you'll start to see darker ciders.

We press a new batch of cider in the fall every 2 to 3 weeks, so be sure to try our cider regularly!

Last year, we made Grape Cider.  Many folks have been asking if we'll continue this year.  Unfortunately, we won't be pressing grape cider this season.  We're glad that you liked it, and we'll consider it in future years, but for this year, we will not be making the grape cider.
We look forward to seeing you at the Farmers Market!
