Orleans, Jefferson schedule Christmas tree pickup; Tammany designates drop-off sites
In Orleans Parish, residents are asked to place trees curbside on their regularly scheduled garbage collection days Jan. 7-9. The trees must be free of lights, ornaments, tinsel and tree stands. Artificial or flocked trees will not be picked up. Residents are asked not to place trees in plastic bags or on neutral grounds.
The trees will be collected, sorted and bundled by the city's Department of Sanitation and its solid waste contractors, Metro Service Group, Richard's Disposal Inc. and Empire Services. The trees will then be placed in selected coastal zones in an effort to promote wetlands restoration and protect the coastline
Last year, the city collected more than 6,900 Christmas trees and had them airlifted to Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans East. The project has re-established about 175 acres of marsh at Bayou Sauvage, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Jefferson Parish uses Christmas trees for coastal restoration efforts as well. As in Orleans, residents are asked to put out only trees that are real, unpainted and without lights, tinsel, ornaments, tree stands or plastic bags
Jefferson households - including those in Gretna, Harahan, Kenner, Lafitte and Westwego - are asked to place trees curbside on the evening of Jan. 6 so trucks can pick them up Jan. 7-9.
Some of the trees will be placed in marshes near Lafitte to help protect and restore Jefferson's coastal wetlands. Others will be brought to Wood Materials LLC to be chipped and used for composting.
Although the state no longer provides funding for marsh restoration projects using Christmas trees, Jefferson Parish is able to continue the program thanks to a private donation of $25,000 and the efforts of Wood Materials, Cochiara's Marina and volunteers.
The parish is looking for volunteers with shallow-draft boats to move trees from a Lafitte staging area to the shoreline fences in Goose Bayou. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. Jan. 9 at Cochiara's Marina, 4477 Jean Lafitte Blvd. A second effort will be held Jan. 16 if needed.
Volunteers must be at least 18 and dressed appropriately for the work. Gloves, safety glasses, life vests, lunch and refreshments will be provided.
St. Tammany Parish will accept trees for recycling at the parish fairgrounds in Covington and at the old Levee Board building, 61134 Military Road, in Slidell.
Again, only real, unadorned trees will be accepted. They can be dropped off between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until Jan. 29.
In St. Charles Parish, trees may be placed curbside for pickup by Jan. 12 or brought anytime to designated areas at the East and West Bank Bridge Parks in Destrehan and Luling.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ABANDONED VEHICLE AUCTION
NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, Dec. 29, at 9 a.m., the City of New Orleans' Department of Public Works will hold its sixth abandoned vehicle auction of 2015. The auction will be located at Almonaster Auto Pound, 10200 Almonaster Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70127.
Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 25 vehicle auctions, selling 2,600 abandoned cars and contributing over $1,694,485 to the City's General Fund.
As in prior auctions, the buyer will pay a $50 administrative fee which results in a notarized title at the time of payment. This feature has been extremely well received by the public as the buyers no longer have to take all of the documentation to the Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new title. This process has proven that it saves the citizens time and streamlines their purchase.
The current auction will have 133 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.
Abandoned vehicles take up parking spaces needed for traffic circulation, contribute to a sense of neglect in neighborhoods and can become junked harborages for rats and mosquitoes. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans' Department of Public Works has towed 17,068 vehicles through Dec. 19, 2015.
Online Bidding: Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting
www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction, get vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Pound.
All prospective buyers must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.
Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, LA, is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.
Individuals interested in purchasing a car are encouraged to pre-register today and to arrive early on Thursday as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.
Quick Facts
All vehicle information is currently on Brown's Auction Web site, www.brownsauction.com.
Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.
The current auction will be advertised on Friday, Dec. 25, 2015.
Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.
Purchasing a vehicle
Cash or cashier's check required
Payment must be received on the day of the auction. If payment is not received, the purchased vehicle will be placed on the list for the next scheduled auction, the buyer's $50 deposit is forfeited and the bidder is barred from participation in future auctions.
A $50 administrative fee will be added for each purchased vehicle which gives the buyer a notarized title to that vehicle
City employees and relatives of City employees are forbidden from purchasing any vehicles at the auction.
For more information, visit Brown's Auction Company's Web site at www.brownsauction.com.
New Orleans to auction abandoned vehicles
More than 133 vehicles are for sale as part of the City of New Orleans' abandoned vehicle auction next week.
Buyers will get to bid on autos, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.
It's reported to be the sixth such auction this year by the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works.
According to a press release, buyers will need to pay a $50 administrative fee.
The auction is scheduled Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Almonaster Auto Pound. A preview days and buyer registration is scheduled Monday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Road to Tokyo retraces the grueling trail that led from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay, by way of New Guinea and Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, Burma, the islands of the Pacific, China, India, and Alaska. Exhibits explore the evolving strategy for fighting relentless Japanese forces in Asia and the Pacific, examining cultural differences, logistical challenges, and the staggering range of extreme condi...tions that confronted American military forces in Asia and the Pacific. This is the story of a world that was unimaginably alien to American GIs, a conflict of searing brutality, and a victory so devastating it is hotly debated even today. But this is also the story of the American spirit that carried the day.

LSU will face Texas Tech for the first time since 1957 when the 20th-ranked Tigers travel to Houston to take on the Red Raiders in the 10th annual AdvoCare Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium.
Kickoff for the Texas Bowl is set for 8 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Tickets are currently on sale at www.LSUtix.net for what will be LSU's second trip to NRG Stadium, home of the NFL's Houston Texans. A year ago, the Tigers opened the season with a 28-24 win over Wisconsin in NRG Stadium.
"We are very excited to be invited to the AdvoCare Texas Bowl in Houston," LSU coach Les Miles said. "It's a great venue for our players and fans. Dessert | Yield: 7 jumbo-sized cupcakes or 14 normal cupcakes Prep time: 30 min | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 1 hour 15 min
You can make this into a full size cake by doubling the recipe.
Ingredients
6 large eggs
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/2 cup flour
2 tsp. finely grated grapefruit peel
3/4 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
1/8 tsp. salt
1/3 cup sugar
Strawberry Garnish (optional)
3 cups (1 pint) strawberries, hulled and sliced
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. strained fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
1/2 tsp. finely grated grapefruit peel
Grapefruit Glaze
1/2 cup strained fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice
1/4 cup sugar
Process
Separate eggs and discard yolks or refrigerate/freeze for another use. Measure the egg whites to make sure you have 3/4 cup, adding or removing whites if necessary. Place in a mixer bowl and let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, make the strawberry garnish (if using). Add the sliced strawberries to a bowl along with the sugar, grapefruit juice and peel. Refrigerate at least one hour or overnight, stirring occasionally.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Fill muffin pan with paper liners and lightly spray them with cooking spray.
Sift powdered sugar and flour together three times. Stir in the grapefruit peel. Set aside.
Add cream of tartar, grapefruit juice and salt to the egg whites. Beat on medium speed until frothy. Gradually add sugar and beat on high speed until sugar is dissolved and stiff peaks form.
Gently fold in flour mixture, 1/4 cup at a time. Gently spoon batter into paper liners, filling about 3/4 full. Use a knife to cut through the batter to remove air pockets. Bake for about 15 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Meanwhile, stir together grapefruit juice and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, reduce heat slightly and simmer until the mixture has reduced by half, about 15 minutes. Set aside to cool.
Serve the cakes drizzled with the grapefruit glaze and garnished with strawberries

The Original Tuxedo Jazz Band is a musical treasure with a rich 105-year history that dates to 1910 when New Orleans cornetist Papa Celestin performed with the band at the old Tuxedo Dance Hall. In over a century, the group's leadership has changed hands only five times. Most recently in 2011 the baton passed from the great Bob French to his nephew Gerald French who has led the band for the past four years.
New Year's Eve night at the Playhouse kicks off when doors open at 8:30 p.m. General admission tickets include open seating, premium open bar with themed cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and a champagne toast at midnight for $150 per person. Middle-aged drunkard John (Martin), employed by a Dublin funeral home, returns from a Christmas Eve burial service accompanied by Mark (Joiner), an uncertain young man who has assisted with the day's mourners. Steadying himself with drink and talk to meet his estranged daughter Mary (Wolfe) about the impending death of his ex-wife, John relates, piece by piece, the history that led him to this lonely day. McPherson, acclaimed author of The Weir, here offers a brief, deep, delicate story of forgiveness and redemption...or, just as effective, of that stage of life when redemption no longer matters.

Dine with Mosquito Supper Club
Two charming hosts (and fantastic cooks) serve up authentic Cajun food, family-style.
Martin brings her family's food from Chauvin, LA, to the city in a family-style setting. Platters are set down on the table, and everyone digs in. It's a dining style New Orleanians relate to, whether they're from Irish, German, Italian, or Afro-Caribbean families. Cajun music fills the dining room (limited seating, reservations only) as guests enjoy a five-plus course meal.
A sample menu, this one for fall, is quintessentially Cajun: doughy "Lagniappe Rolls" with Steen's Butter (as if butter isn't decadent enough, this one is laced with cane syrup from Abbeville, LA); crispy eggplant fritters; gumbo with shrimp, crab, and okra; cucumber and tomato salad with Steen's vinaigrette; stuffed Lousiana crabs; and blackberry dumplings with "Pop Rouge" ice cream for dessert. (Local folk of a certain age may remember the old "Pop Rouge" strawberry/cream soda from Lafayette.)
This fall, Mosquito Supper Club commences on Thursday nights at 810 N. Rampart Street, a light-filled, second-story space in the French Quarter with a can't-beat-it view of Armstrong Park. Dinner begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. Go to their site's reservations page to book your seats... and meet your adopted Cajun family.
Extra helping: Michot and Martin also run Curious Oyster Company in St. Roch Market, open daily, if you can't make it to a supper club event.

Event: Re-Enactment of the Battle of New Orleans, Night Battle
Location: 8207 Patricia St., Chalmette (Right behind the Walmart, adjacent to Torres Park)
The Meraux Living History Park and the Louisiana Living History Foundation will host a FREE re-enactment of the Battle of New Orleans to celebrate the 201st Anniversary. The Public is invited to attend, and learn about this most consequential battle in American History.
Last year, the LLHF hosted 1588 historical re-enactors for over seven nations to put one of the largest Battle Re-Enactments in American History. According to St. Bernard Parish, the event constituted the largest economic impact of any tourism event in St. Bernard history.
This year's re-enactment will be the main event of a four day commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans, that includes free symposiums on the Battle at Nunez Community College on Thursday & Sunday (Jan. 7 &10), and Living History Demonstrations on Friday & Saturday, a Saturday Night (Jan. 9) premier of the Documentary: New Orleans 1815 "Such stuff as dreams are made on", a film about the effort to put on last year's re-enactment, presented at Docville Farm.
LLHF's annual historical festival commemorating the Battle of New Orleans occurs on at a leased tract of land located off of Patricia Street in St. Bernard Parish, the original geographic region where most of the Battles of the War of 1812's New Orleans Campaign took place. It occurs thanks to the generosity of the Joseph & Arlene Meraux Charitable Foundation, the Honorary Consul of Great Britain Mr. James Coleman, and Mr. Terry Tedesco
"In January 2015, we assembled on our new Meraux Living History Park more people in War of 1812-era uniforms than at any time since January 1815," explained LLHF military historian and President Tim Pickles. "Re-enactors came from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and across the United States to put on this event to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. Moreover, most people don't realize it, but it literally takes an act of Congress to have re-enactment on a Federal Battlefield. That's why we created the Living History Park on Patricia Street."
Federal law currently prohibits the re-creation of a battle at a National Park site, including the nearby Chalmette National Park, where the final battle took place on Jan 8, 1815. The Meraux Foundation's and Mr. Terry Tedesco's agreement to lease a large undeveloped land tract allowed the highly successful 2015 re-enactment of the five land battles fought between American forces under Gen Andrew Jackson and British forces under Gen. Edward Pakeham to be a feature of the Bicentennial Commemoration. The construction of a replica of the 1815 Battlefield was intended to create a Living History Park to hold the Annual Re-Enactment each year.
The purpose of the LLHF is to increase public awareness of History in general--and Louisiana history in particular--by presenting live shows, re-creations, documentary films, websites and exhibitions, both temporary and permanent, that highlight the history of the State of Louisiana and its people and their antecedents, with particular attention being paid to the commemoration of centennial, bicentennial and tercentennial anniversaries in the State of Louisiana. LLHF acts as a clearinghouse for ideas, and a resource to assist communities throughout the state to research and record their own history, in co-operation with other historical groups.
