ONLINE EDUCATION INITIATIVE MOVING FORWARD

cThe Online Education Initiative (OEI) is making progress on a number of fronts. In November, 66 of 72 pilot courses had been submitted for design review. The review process will focus on making sure the courses are consistent with the course design standards adopted during the summer, and to provide faculty with the design support they may need. The OEI is also busy finalizing the selection of a 24/7 online tutoring provider and recently issued an RFP for a common course management system (CCMS). A decision is expected in February.

VETERANS RESOURCE CENTER CELEBRATES OPENING WITH PANEL DISCUSSION AND RECEPTION

fThe new Veterans Resource Center celebrated its official opening with a panel discussion and reception on Thursday, October 30. The center, housed in room 5403, is located next to the Disabled Student Programs and Services Office.

The panel discussion featured seven veterans, five of whom are current students at Foothill. They discussed the challenges they face in pursuing their education and some of the social issues associated with being a returning veteran. Nearly all cited Foothill's veterans program as the reason they chose the school over others closer to home.

The reception featured remarks from student veteran Daniel Muse, who represented the more than 300 veterans who utilize the center each quarters. Attendees were encouraged to donate funds to purchase much-needed book vouchers for the students. At the conclusion of the event, more than $7,600 was collected.
