JUNIOR PARENT NIGHT/JUNIOR ADVISEMENTS
It's that time of year again - Junior Advisement meetings are starting soon! At that appointment, we will be discussing your student's high school graduation status, his/her options for senior year courses and his/her post-secondary plans. You should have received (or will soon receive) an invitation in the mail listing the time and date of your student's Junior Advisement appointment. In order to make that meeting as productive as possible, we recommend the following:
  1. If at all possible, please plan to attend Junior Parent Night on Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00 pm in the Auditorium. The PowerPoint presentation for Junior Parent Night will be posted to the Counseling page of the Milton website in advance of the program, so please feel free to print those slides off in advance of the meeting if you'd like to take notes (we'll also have some blank paper available for notes). The link to the presentation will be under the heading "Parent Information." If you are not able to attend Junior Parent Night (or even if you are able to attend, but need a refresher), please review the PowerPoint presentation from that night prior to your student's Junior Advisement appointment. We presented the same PowerPoint to our Class of 2017 students on 9/24/2015. If your student missed that presentation, we encourage you to review the PowerPoint with your student prior to the meeting. Here is a link to the Milton Counseling website:
    http://school.fultonschools.org/hs/milton/Pages/Counseling.aspx

  2. At the Junior Advisement meeting, we will be providing each student with a copy of our College Quick Reference Guide, which contains information on topics ranging from the SAT/ACT, scholarship search tips, how to estimate GPA for colleges and for HOPE, the college application process, etc. The College Quick Reference Guide will be posted on the Milton Counseling website (under the "College Planning" heading) - please plan to review that document prior to the Junior Advisement appointment and bring any questions you may have with you to the meeting.

  3. Included in your invitation to the Junior Advisement appointment are step-by-step instructions for your student to follow in order to complete their mandatory Bridge Law activity for 11th grade. Please be sure your student completes this activity prior to the meeting, and that they bring a printed copy of their results to the meeting (they should have at least three colleges saved to their portfolio).

We look forward to seeing you at Junior Parent Night and at your student's Junior Advisement meeting!

The PSAT/NMSQT-a key step in your child's journey to college
On Wednesday, October 14, all 9th-11th grade students will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT, a test of the skills and knowledge essential for college and career that students are learning in class.
We encourage your child to take advantage of the many benefits the PSAT/NMSQT offers:
  • Connects students to colleges and universities across the country, and to scholarship organizations.
  • Prepares students for the new SAT® and college and fuels practice recommendations on Khan Academy®.
  • Matches students with AP® courses that make the most of their academic strengths. AP classes can provide an edge in the admission process, and an opportunity to earn college credit.
It's a wonderful chance for our 9th-11th grade students to be recognized and rewarded for the skills and knowledge they've earned.

CCCCOLLEGE & CAREER CENTER
Milton Families,

We wanted to take a minute to reach out to our parents and students regarding some policies within the College and Career Center (CCC). The CCC schedules various events, during school and outside of the school day. We work closely with our partners and must adhere to their policies when scheduling these events. For example, a partner may have a minimum or maximum participation level required in order to hold an event. If we are not able to meet the requirements set forth by a partner then we would be required to cancel an event, especially the ones that are after normal school hours. Please note that we do not take scheduling or canceling these events lightly. We know that cancelling an event is disappointing to you and your student, and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience. If you have any questions or concerns about an event please contact the CCC Co-Chairs (Monica and Shannon) directly using the email address below. We are in constant communication with our partners and work to make these decisions jointly. We have partnered with these companies because they provide a very valuable service to all of our students, and we do not wish to jeopardize this relationship in any way.

We look forward to continuing to work with you and your student in the College and Career Center.

Shannon Wagar and Monica Meng
