It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year:
*"A Climate of Change"
It's my favourite time of the year! There is an energy and excitement at this time of the year that is unlike any other time - the crispness in the air first thing in the morning that gives way to warm basking sun in the afternoon; students still joyful and full of enthusiasm for new adventures and projects, before the reality of exactly how many essays, assignments and exams are looming ahead of them sets in. But I think one of my favourite things about this time of the year is the bounty we enjoy at both farmers markets and in the garden with tomato plants laden with beautiful red fruit and zucchini threatening to take over the yard.

It seems hard to imagine that this beauty, what I would name as a gift from God, is being threatened by the very way we live. Well, if I am to be honest, by the way I live. And I think it is that kind of truth that many different groups, including the Catholic Church, are calling us to examine. This past June, Pope Francis released his much anticipated Encyclical Letter Laudato Si, On Care For Our Common Home placing climate change prominently on the list of Catholic social concerns.

The encyclical outlines the many ways in which climate change threatens the human race, how it impacts and links all the struggles facing humanity and our world today from poverty, to war, to drought. As one who has read and struggled through many encyclicals, I can honestly say this was a great read: clear, concise, thought provoking, challenging and affirming. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand more about the challenges facing our world today. And perhaps, that is the beauty of the encyclical itself. It is not intended to be just for Catholics, or Christians, or even people of faith. Pope Francis writes it to all the people of the world. It truly is intended for all of us who live on this planet together, sharing one common home.

This theme of ecological justice has captured the Catholic imagination in a new way. On September 3, 2015 The Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) published a new resource entitled A Church Seeking Justice: The Challenge of Pope Francis to the Church in Canada.

This is yet another document, created for Canadian Catholics that encourages us to explore the impact of climate change and our responsibility to mitigate its challenges based on the principals of positive stewardship as articulated in the book of Genesis.

The challenge as educators is how to present this important reality to our students who must work with us to effect real change. Climate change issues truly are intergenerational, both at the root of the problem and the hope for solution.

Fortunately, there are many resources available to us to help explain the issues and commence work towards positive change.

For older students and young adults in particular, one great resource is Green Spirit TV produced by RomanCatholicTV.com with assistance from Bishop Donald Bolen, Chair of the Justice and Peace Commission, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. Green Spirit TV has created a 12 part series of short films (all under 15 minutes) based on a variety of topics and provides downloads for reflection questions on each topic. The first in the series is titled "A Life Giving Ecology for All" and features speakers such as Bishop reflecting on the Church's mission in regards to justice.

Other titles include "Who is in the Greatest Peril?"

 "Responsible Stewardship"

 "Think Globally, Work Locally"

"Solidarity"

Engaging younger children in dialogue about the issues of climate change can be more challenging. Development and Peace provides a short 2 minute video clip featuring a wonderful character, CJ the Bee, who explains what climate change is and highlights the reality that we all need to look after the earth and asks the important question "are we doing a good job?"

The Canadian Catholic Organization of Development and Peace's fall campaign is entitled A Climate of Change.

As usual Development and Peace provides a host of excellent resources to help us explore the effects of climate change and our participation in the problem of climate of change. This year they have provided two activities specifically for youth: one for high school students and one for elementary age studentsThese resources are all available by download or you can order them for free online along with the many other resources available.
The high school activity will be explored in depth at a high school workshop hosted by Campus Ministry at King's University College and Development and Peace on Friday November 6, 2015. If you are interested in sending 6 to 8 student leaders to participate in this leadership training please contact Annette Donovan Panchaud  for more information and to reserve your school's spot. Space is limited.

The Climate of Change campaign culminates with signing postcards and sending them to Parliament to voice Canadian's concerns to the Prime Minister, whoever that will be, ahead of the Global talks on Climate Change scheduled to take place at the end of November in Paris, France. It is time for us to make our voices heard.

Climate change is a boundary crossing issue that is coming to the forefront in all spheres. Naomi Klein, a social activist and secular author, who recently published the book This Changes Everything

It has inspired the documentary of the same name that opened at the Toronto Film festival this past week. It is available for pre-order on iTunes and should be available at the end of this year.

The book was very informative. Klein outlines the many different aspects of Climate change and why it matters now, more than ever. This book is for the person who really wants an in-depth study of the many aspects of climate change. Interestingly,  Klein has been invited by Pope Francis  to speak at a conference on climate change.

Groups from all over are uniting to speak of challenge - a challenge to examine our lives, to change our behaviour. Listen to 3 witnesses below to see how their lives are being effected.

Let us join together to live justly so that others may just live.

May peace and blessings follow you in this new Academic year!
