Head of School Corner
Julie Osborn, PA Council President

Dear MIS Families,

The amazing community at MIS – each one of you – is one of the many reasons I am excited to send both of my kids to school here. And this year I get to take a bigger role in strengthening our community as the new president of the MIS Parent Council. This year’s council includes 15 parent volunteers and we are extending an invitation for you to get involved.  We have three big goals and we need your help to achieve them: welcoming new families into our school community, improving our online communication, and increasing sustainability.

MIS Students Venture Out for Self Discovery This Week

MIS 2/3 multiage classes are currently exploring how our origins and ancestors give us information about who we are.  In their inquiry, the students are studying the native american culture and traditions in Montana.  This Friday, these intrepid students will venture to Ronan to the People’s Center to learn more about the language, culture, stories and games of the Salish people.

Bike, Walk, Carpool or Bus Week

MIS PA Council Organizes School Wide Contest with Prizes
MIS will be participating in Missoula’s annual Bike, Walk, (Carpool) or Bus Week, thanks to the PA Council and the school’s sustainability commitment.  Outside each classroom you will find a roster for next week.  Each student will get to place a sticker next to the the days that he or she bikes, walks, buses or carpools to school.  Volunteers will be available to help the preschool and younger students. Everyone who participates will receive a reward at an upcoming assembly.  Don’t live close enough to MIS to bike or walk?  You can help your child participate next week by taking an opportunity to ride in from a parent’s downtown office, for example.  Maybe you can carpool to a nearby cafe and walk through Greenough Park to school.  Maybe you can hop on the Mountain Line from the University. Thanks for participating!

All participants should wear either Griz apparel or MIS logo shirts.  We will carry small flags, world balloons and signs.  More details about parade placement will be sent out next week.

SCRIP PROGRAMS AT MIS
MIS would like to thank Missy Miculka, who volunteered to take charge of MIS SCRIP programs this year.  A simple review highlighted the programs with the best possible return for MIS and the easiest way for parents and friends of MIS to contribute through shopping.  This year, we aim to surpass last year's earnings of more than $5,000!

The Missoula International School (MIS), a nonprofit, independent pre-k through 8th grade school founded in 1995, offers unique and challenging 21st century educational opportunities for students in the greater Missoula area. The school provides an inquiry based learning environment as the flagship Primary Years Program (PYP) International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in the Northwest and a full Spanish language immersion education.
