Emerging Issue: Avian Flu Resource

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported that between December 2014 and July 2015 the avian influenza (HPAI) H5 outbreak affected over 48 million birds in the US. The virus is spread through contact with fecal droppings, saliva and nasal discharges of infected birds.

AgriSafe Network, in collaboration with three NIOSH Agricultural Centers produced a resource outlining personal protective equipment (PPE) recommendations for poultry producers and workers among impacted facilities.

This new Avian Influenza Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Guidelines resource contains information for producers and workers on how to protect themselves during all phases of avian flu.

Immunization Schedules for Adults in Easy-to-Read Formats
The agriculture population often does seek care unless ill or injured.  Many adults incorrectly assume that the vaccines they received as children will protect them for the rest of their lives. Generally this is true, except that:
  • Some adults were never vaccinated as children
  • Newer vaccines were not available when some adults were children
  • Immunity can begin to fade over time
  • As we age, we become more susceptible to serious disease caused by common infections (such as flu and pneumococcus)
  • Bacterial infections such as Tetanus are prevented through ongoing booster vaccines
Learn More about what vaccines are needed by adults.
A Spanish language version of the easy-to-read (patient-focused) adult immunization schedule is now available
