Principal's Message

Dear WMS Families:

As a parent and an educator, I realize how frightening it can be to read about teen suicides that have occurred in neighboring communities so similar to our own. Committed to taking preventative action, Wayland Middle School and Wayland High School joined forces last year to begin implementing the evidence-based curriculum called S.O.S. (Signs of Suicide) in our seventh and tenth grade Wellness classes. We have shared this curriculum with the entire faculty as well, to help them detect any warning signs they might see in the classroom. We aim to equip students and staff with the tools to recognize signs of depression and actively care for one another. Guidance Counselor, Suzanne Bernstein, and 7th grade Wellness teacher, Pam Riddle, will co-teach this unit to our 7th grade students.  Please do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns.

Respectfully,

Betsy Gavron

Technovation Challenge 2016
MS & HS Teams Forming
Community Mentors Needed

The Technovation Challenge (technovationchallenge.org) is an entrepreneurial competition for teams of girls to solve a problem in their community by developing a mobile app (or at least a prototype). No coding experience is necessary and many different skills are needed for teams to be successful - creativity, collaboration, public speaking, research, marketing, design, as well as technology. Teams of 3-5 will work with teacher coaches and mentors from the community. We are seeking female mentors to provide feedback and guidance on students’ projects. Please contact us if you’d like to learn more about the role. The next meeting is on November 20th in the WMS computer lab from 2:30-4:30pm. There is a regional kickoff event at Microsoft’s NERD Center in Cambridge on December 5th from 1:30-6:00pm and we hope all of the teams can make the event. Parent transportation is required.

Please let us know your interest via this link or contact us directly with questions.

Ideas for future Annual PTO Appeals at WMS

During our October PTO Board meeting, one of the items on our agenda was to review the current WMS fundraising processes and options and plan for next year.  As part of the review, we were briefed on the Townwide PTO's recent meeting regarding the appeal processes for all schools in the district.  We confirmed that all three (3) elementary schools as well as the High School have moved toward a "direct giving" program rather than a product-based sales program.  That is to say that 100% of the contribution that family gives to a school remains there and is used toward programs or items to benefit their student's learning experience while at the school.  As stewards of the funds donated to WMS, and in keeping with the spirit of all of the schools in the district, the WMS PTO would like to explore and vote on transitioning it's annual appeal toward a direct giving program for the coming years.

Our discussion and vote will be held at our November Board Meeting which is being held this Wednesday 11/18 at 9:30am in Ms. Gavron's office.  All parents/guardians are welcome to the meeting and we look forward to hearing from any of you in support or against this change.  If you have any questions at all, or are unable to attend the meeting and would like to have your input heard, please reach out to Peg Trentini at [email protected] We look forward to seeing or hearing from you!

"Close Buy" Fundraiser Product Delivery

If your child sold any "Close Buy" products during our fall fundraiser, he/she will be bringing them home this week.  Please be on the lookout for the items.  We appreciate your participation and support!  Thank you.
