International Aloe Science Council says IASC-certified Aloe vera products do not contain the Prop 65 listed chemical

On December 4, 2015, California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) added "Aloe vera, non-decolorized whole leaf extract" and goldenseal root powder to the state's list of chemicals known to cause cancer.

The International Aloe Science Council ( IASC ), Silver Spring, MD, wants all consumers to know that "Aloe vera, non-decolorized whole leaf extract" is not an ingredient sold by IASC members, nor is it used in finished consumer products that have earned the IASC certification seal.  All IASC aloe vera products that comply with the strict requirements for certification do not contain the aloe vera ingredient recently added to the California Prop 65 list.
 
In April 2015, it was proposed that "Aloe vera, whole leaf extract" be added to the Proposition 65 listing, based on the classification of this material as an agent that is "possibly carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The IARC classification is based on a two-year drinking water study performed by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) on a test material identified as "non-decolorized whole leaf extract of Aloe barbadensis Miller," an unpurified aloe vera material. The IARC classification is specific to this test material. Following the consideration of public comments provided by the IASC and other organizations and individuals knowledgeable about aloe vera, the final Proposition 65 listing added the important clarification that the Proposition 65 listed aloe vera material is "Aloe vera, non-decolorized whole leaf extract."
 
"The April 2015 notice of intent to list this substance provides a reference to the aloe ingredients that are not included in this listing, specifically Aloe vera decolorized whole leaf extract, Aloe  vera  gel, and Aloe vera gel extract," stated Jane Wilson, executive director of IASC. "These aloe ingredients are used in IASC certified products, and consumers can be assured that products bearing the IASC seal are not formulated using "Aloe vera, non-decolorized whole leaf extract."
   
The IASC third­ party certification program ensures the content and purity of aloe vera products. Consumers should look for the IASC seal when they purchase aloe vera products to ensure that the products do not contain the Prop 65 listed ingredient.
