Friendly Influence
How taking Wood  Badge course help

According to a February 2014 Pew Research Center study of the social network, almost 60% of Americans now use Facebook. But where did these users come from? A Columbia University professor contends "people are more likely to be influenced  by friends who already know their other friends than by friends who don't share the same social circle. So the conventional wisdom is that most people joined Facebook because others from their social circle invited them".

This principle also applies to many programs we offer in Scouting - like Wood Badge. There are outliers of course but an overwhelming number of Scouters attend training leadership programs like Wood Badge because a "friend" actually looked them in the eyes and invited them. Personally reached out. Peer influence and social ties shape who attends and who doesn't attend Wood Badge.

It is highly encouraging that we have great Wood Badge trained leaders in our Council. We just don't have enough of them to assume all who deserve to be invited actually are invited. That means some good people risk not being invited.

Please consider reaching out. Call on those in your circles of Scouting who could truly benefit from Wood Badge. Personally reach out.

We have two great courses led by great Scouters. Your "friendly influence" counts.

Report to the Nation
Scouts spend a week in our nation's capital

Ten extraordinary youth from across the nation, including Manhattan Eagle Scout Kenneth S., were chosen to deliver the 2014 Report to the Nation last month to top government officials.

The annual Report to the Nation serves as an important reminder to our country's leaders about Scouting's nationwide impact - and there is no better evidence then the kids we serve in the program to deliver the report!
