President's Report
By: Dr. Abby Schuster

Dear CVMA Members,

CVMA has been busy this past month as we continue into Spring, both with upcoming social and CE events.  Our Spring happy hour was held Friday, May 15,  and I'd like to thank everyone who came out to enjoy the evening and spent some time relaxing and getting to know our colleagues.   Six new grads joined us for the event and we're pleased that they're joining us as colleagues in Cincinnati.  Our annual summer canoeing trip has also been set and is coming up on June 14th.  This event has been a lot of fun in the past, and we hope to get another great turnout this year, family and friends are welcome.  The official invite will be coming out shortly--so be on the lookout.

The Program Committee has also been hard at work. The May CE event is coming up on Tuesday, May 26, at Seasons 52 in Hyde Park. Dr. Turi Aarnes will be speaking on safe, inexpensive anesthesia protocols and monitoring.  The event is being sponsored by Zoetis.  The short course planning is also well underway, and the date has been set for Sunday, October 18th at the Great Wolf Lodge, just north of Cincinnati.

We are always interested to hear ideas from members.  Last month, we asked you for input on continuing education.  Now, we want your input on potential social events. Please check out this month's pulse check related to the topic (left column), and tell us on what you'd like to see and do around town.

Thanks for reading,

Abby Schuster, DVM
Chair, CVMA

Another Howling Success

The SPCA's largest annual fundraiser, hosted by WKRC Local 12's Rob Braun, was held at the Sharonville Convention Center on April 25, 2015.  This year's event was another success with 875 people in attendance and 14 animals finding their new forever homes. CVMA Program Chair, Dr. Kamaria Catalan was the CVMA Board representative to the Fur Ball this year.  She was the lucky auction winner and will have the honor of throwing out the first pitch at the this year's Bark in the Park Cincinnati Reds game scheduled for May 26!

United Pet Fund Upcoming Education Event--
Nonprofit Donor Cultivation:  Keeping Donors Happy (and Generous)

Topic:   "Did you know that half of new donors this year are unlikely to ever give to you again? A study by Adrian Sergeant in 2001 found that 36% of those first time donors who lapsed did so because they felt that other causes were more deserving. A large percent cited various customer service issues. Another study suggests that as many as 65% of donors never give again due to a lack of communication from nonprofits. The more recent Fundraising Effectiveness Project shows that we have seen very little improvement (as a sector) in this area. In fact, among new donors only 10% make a second gift."  What would it mean for your fundraising program if you kept just 10% more of those donors? 25%? 50%?
