President's Report
Dear Colleagues,

Though schedules are generally slowing down as the weather cools down and the days shorten, there is still a lot going on within your CVMA. The Fall Short Course is just around the corner, and the Programs Committee has been working hard to set up another great day of CE.   The event will be held on Sunday, October 18
th at the Great Wolf Lodge, a family-friendly resort and event center that boasts an indoor water park. Discounted rates for hotel rooms have been arranged and we'll be having a hot full breakfast and lunch that day!

A great slate of speakers has been arranged, starting with Dr. Stephen Birchard, who will discuss surgery topics and techniques relevant and useful for general practitioners to utilize in daily. Not only is Dr. Birchard an extremely accomplished surgeon and teacher, he is also an exceptionally engaging and entertaining speaker. Definitely not to be missed!

There will also be a portion of the day focused on the extremely important, but often under-recognized, concept of compassion fatigue and wellness of the veterinary team. Compassion fatigue, burn out, depression, and even suicide are all too-real and all too-common problems in our profession.  Dr. Jennifer Brandt will discuss coping methods to deal with the overwhelming toll that our profession can take on us mentally, physically, and emotionally.  These topics are not only timely, but also incredibly important, as we (as a profession) need to better acknowledge the need to care for ourselves if we hope to be able to effectively care for our patients, clients, and staff.

There is a technician program available as well.  Dr. Brandt will discuss compassion fatigue for veterinary staff and effective team communication.  The technicians will also have talks focusing on anesthetic monitoring and post-operative care by board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Ashley Wiese, who is also a great speaker and teacher.

If you, your associates, and technicians have not registered yet, please do so ASAP.
More details and information can be found below.

Though the Short Course has been a major focus, it has not been the only thing your board has been working on this month.  The website has been revamped, and details regarding the new increased usability are included in their own section of this newsletter. Please check it out!

Thank you for reading,

Abby Schuster
