President's Report
By: Dr. Abby Schuster

Dear CVMA Members,

The CVMA wrapped up the Spring with 2 social events and a continuing education event all within the past month. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend one or more of these events.

The annual CVMA canoe trip was held this past Sunday and everyone had a great time once again.  Pictures of the fun are included later in the newsletter.  The details of the Fall Short Course have also been set.  The Fall Short course is scheduled for Sunday, October 18, at Great Wolf Lodge.  Dr. Stephen Birchard will be speaking to the veterinarians about surgery topics and Dr. Jennifer Brandt will speak on compassion fatigue.  There will once again be a technician program as well.  Techs will hear from Dr. Ashley Wiese on anesthesia and post-op patient care, as well as Dr. Brandt on the topic of compassion fatigue.

Though we are heading into the summer recess, your board will still be busy with multiple projects. The website is getting a much-needed update, the language of the by-laws is being reviewed, and we are working on a community outreach program with the help of local fire departments. The project involves window decals that alert first responders to the presence of pets within a household.  We are looking for a small number of practices to help with a trial run of this project and then give us feedback on the idea. If your practice is interested in helping, please contact Holly or myself by July 1st. If more practices are interested than are needed, we will take the first practices that respond.

I hope that you all have a fun and relaxing summer. Thank you for reading, and see you in the Fall.

Abby Schuster, DVM
Chair, CVMA

Dr. Schuster presented the President's Report. (see above).  Treasurer's Report:  Refer to Dr Walkenhorst's reporT.  Secretary's Report: Dr Goforth reviewed the May minutes and reported an error. We currently have 155 "likes" on our member Facebook page and 230 "likes" on our public page.

Executive Director's Report:  Holly is finishing up the 2015 directory and will be contacting people who volunteered for the Bylaws review ad hoc committee later this month.   Continuing Education: Dr Catalan reported our next CE will be Dr. Meghan Herron on Sept 22 at Maggiano's speaking on behavior issues, and Dr. Valerie Parker on Nov 17 at the American Sign Museum on the topic of obesity and appropriate diets with Royal Canin as a sponsor.  The Fall Short Course will be held at Great Wolf Lodge on October 18, 2015. The speakers will be Dr. Ashley Wiese speaking on anesthesia and post op care for techs and Dr. Stephen Birchard on surgery for DVMs.  Jennifer Brandt will provide veterinary wellness session discussions for both DVMs and techs.

Public Relations Report: In Dr Schwartz's absence, Holly Molony gave her report. The May 15 outing at the Cock and Bull Public House in Hyde Park was well attended. Six new graduates were able to attend. The canoe trip is scheduled for June 14. Other possible locations were discussed for future social outings. Animal Welfare Report: Refer to Dr. Cron's report. Vet Tech Liaison Report:  See Dr. Goecke's report, right column.

Old Business: Dr. Schuster reported further on the home pet rescue window stickers to alert police or fire officers that pets are inside.  The board agreed to pursue design of a window cling sticker featuring the CVMA logo with room for individual practices to personalize them for their clients.

A review and update of the constitution and bylaws is still underway. The changes will be available for a membership vote at the November scientific meeting.

New Business: The board feels the CVMA website needs an upgrade to enable it to do what our membership needs.  After board discussion, the contract to revamp the website was approved. In the interest of full disclosure, Dr. Schuster noted that her husband has been contracted for this job.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:08 PM.
