Just a reminder that we have extended the abstract submission deadline to Tuesday, November 10. Don't wait - send in your abstract today! See more details below about
abstract submission.
Registration is now open for the 43nd annual VOS conference in Big Sky, Montana, February 27 to March 5, 2016. Take advantage of two ways to save on registration and lodging:
- Early bird registration, which ends December 15, 2015.
- Book your lodging through the VOS website, which gives you an extra registration discount and prevents VOS from incurring extra charges for conference space. If you have questions about lodging or travel, please contact our travel agent Penny Smith at psmith@ski.com.
We have an exciting conference planned! Here is a quick preview of what is in store for Big Sky:
- Our Jacques Jenny Lecturer is scheduled to be Douglas Beaman, MD. Dr. Beaman began his orthopaedic practice in Portland in 1995 at Emanuel Hospital and specializes in lower extremity trauma and reconstructive surgery.
- We will have an expanded, parallel equine program this year with two full days of speakers and abstracts geared towards equine orthopedics and regenerative medicine that will run parallel to the small animal lectures. Confirmed speakers include orthopaedic guru Dr. David Frisbie covering regenerative medicine, imaging expert Dr. Sarah Puchalski and Professor Sue Stover who has contributed so much to our understanding of the etiopathogenesis of musculoskeletal injuries. We will be running panel discussions on these areas, as well as orthopaedic surgery, in addition to keynote presentations and scientific abstracts, so there will be plenty of time for small group discussion with key opinion leaders.
- There will be a special panel on complications and corrections consisting of our colleagues and mentors to remind us that to be a surgeon is to be human.
- The kids' party was such a hit last year that we will have it again this year. So let VOS entertain the little ones while you catch up with old friends and take the night off. More information about the kids' party will be coming soon.
- The silent auction will be held again to raise money for the Foundation. It was such a hit last year that sponsors are scrambling to get their products in. Do not miss out on a win-win, tax deductible opportunity!
- Check out the section below on all that Big Sky has to offer!
Our Fall Board meeting at ACVS was productive and an eye opener for me as to how hard the Board works to keep this organization going. As VOS members you can all rest assured that the VOS board is working diligently to be fiscally responsible while being mindful of the traditions and mission of the organization.
One of the most exciting developments this past year is that all of our Bloomberg Awards, save one, are fully endowed. As you know, the Bloomberg Awards are among the most prestigious awards given to residents and the podium session associated with the awards is always one of the most lively and highly attended sessions.
We are currently searching for this final sponsor and invite any interested parties to contact John Chandler, Director of the Education Foundation, at
jchandler@westvet.net
.
Check out our November Spotlight on a Sponsor on SOUND below!
As always, we welcome any feedback on how we can improve your experience as a VOS member or as an organization in general!

VOS UPDATES ADVERTISING PROGRAM
|
VOS has streamlined its advertising program for its 2015 email newsletters. Advertisers may choose to place an ad for one billing cycle, which covers three newsletter issues, or select a discounted annual package, which covers nine newsletter issues. VOS is now offering vertical banner ad space in addition to horizontal banner ad space. Horizontal and vertical banner ads are available in two sizes (single-height or double-height), and each ad may be linked to the advertiser's website homepage or other web page. A maximum of 15 horizontal and 2 vertical advertising spaces are available in each issue, and priority is given to annual advertisers. To receive more details about the advertising program, please contact Janet Van Dyke. |
VOS ESTABLISHES GUIDELINES FOR SOTI TALKS
|
The Veterinary Orthopedic Society's State of the Industry talks provide an opportunity for our valued sponsors to share with the membership interesting scientific research, clinical data or information about new treatments, developments, and/or techniques. These should be presentations with scientific merit rather than commercials.
Presentations will be 10 minutes long plus 5 minutes for questions. The time limit will be adhered to strictly. PowerPoint files (or PDFs of these files) must be submitted to the Sponsor Chair (janetvandyke@me.com) 14 days in advance for review by the Chair and the Session Moderator. This ensures suitability and enables time for any necessary revisions. Late submissions may result in loss of the preferred time slot for presentation.

VOS ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 10
|
Note: The deadline to submit abstracts has been extended to Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time. We have a parallel equine stream this year, and abstracts are particularly welcome in this area.
VOS invites practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large and small animal species to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance.
Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Clinician investigators should also consider submitting innovative surgical techniques, or case reports describing unusual or difficult cases as these will be reviewed separate from the scientific abstracts; as will submissions for the Complications and Corrections session.
Residents Eligible for Bloomberg Research Awards
VOS also presents up to seven Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Awards each year to residents submitting abstracts for presentation at the VOS Annual Conference. The awards allow the recipients to travel to the meeting to present their work.
Qualified resident abstracts are chosen based on predetermined criteria by a panel of judges. The award(s) are given to help offset the cost of attending the conference to present their research. Awards are provided by the generous funding of the sponsors and are limited.
In 2015, the Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Awards were sponsored by
AO Vet North America,
IMEX,
Merial,
New Generation Devices,
Orthomed,
Securos and the VOS Past Presidents.
Each year, up to seven resident abstracts are chosen for this award.
Visit our
Abstract Submission page to submit your abstract or learn more.
Abstract submission now closes on Tuesday, November 10, 2015, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time.

ORTHOPETS
|
Core concepts, indications and practical tips/hands-on lab for Veterinary Orthotics & Prosthetics (V-OP)
Course Description: The goal of this laboratory is to provide the participant with an overview on how to successfully implement veterinary orthotic and prosthetic solutions into your clinic. The didactic portion of the lab will provide the participant with basic concepts of three point corrective
force application used to create stabilization and allows minimizing wound complications associated with external coaptation/V-OP. We will describe indications for the use of V-OP as an adjunct method after surgical treatment and/or as a solution for patients unable to undergo surgery. The wet lab portion will utilize limb
models and cover the practical/hands-on experience of the phases involved when treating a patient with V-OP. This includes the creation of an imprint that is needed for manufacturing of the device, fitting the patient and analyzing the supportive mechanics of the device. A series of possible complications (donning, doffing, skin sores) and how to address them by in-house modification of the device will be covered. This lab is designed as an introductory session for individuals that are considering incorporating V-OP into their practice or simply want to learn more about the mechanics of coaptation and this novel field.

VETERINARY ORTHOPEDIC IMPLANTS

CBLO
Course Description: CORA based leveling osteotomy is a procedure where the tibial plateau slope is modified by centering the saw blade (ACA) at the location of the CORA (center of rotation of angulation). In doing so there is no secondary translation, ie, the proximal anatomic axis and distal anatomic axis are aligned. The TPA/PTA angle lies between 88 degrees and 90 degrees. The osteotomy is stabilized with a
Veterinary Orthopedic Implant (VOI) specially designed locking plate and counter-sink compression screw. Additional advantages of the CBLO include: ease of surgical planning and technique, excellent long term functional results, normal long term appearance of articular cartilage, rapid healing of the osteotomy (6-7 weeks), ability to apply osteotomy in juvenile patients, and application in cases with excessive slope. The course will detail surgical planning, application in simulated bone, management of complications, and long term outcome.
Lead Instructor:
Dr. Don Hulse, DVM, DACVS, DECVS
Dr. Don Hulse graduated from Texas A&M University in 1970 and completed his surgical training at Kansas State University in 1973. Starting in 1970 and continuing until his appointment as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Texas A&M University in 1984, Dr. Hulse served as a clinician in general practice and as Staff Surgeon at Louisiana State University and Oklahoma State University. He successfully fulfilled the requirements for admission into the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1977. He has developed techniques commonly used for treatment of bone and joint disorders in dogs and is well published in the veterinary literature. His clinical research interests focus on minimally invasive surgery for joint disorders and for fracture treatment.

SPOTLIGHT ON ...
SOUND (FORMERLY SOUND-EKLIN)
|
Location:
Carlsbad, California
What year was the company started?
Sound Technologies, branded as SOUND, was founded in 1996. We are a global leader in diagnostic imaging equipment providing ultrasound, digital radiography and fluoroscopy products for the veterinary market. In conjunction with the imaging modalities, SOUND founded SOUNDSAFE; the original and largest veterinary image cloud providing remote review, archival and sharing of digital radiographs from any device, anywhere.
What products / services does your company offer?
SOUND recently launched SmartDR, the first and only veterinary DR product line to utilize MUSICA image processing algorithms. MUSICA's unique processing technology is patient, anatomy and view agnostic while providing optimally balanced and enhanced images from rat to rhino. The overwhelming market acceptance of this technology has made SmartDR the fastest selling veterinary DR system with over 750 systems sold in the first year.
Can you explain a challenging situation that your company was able to solve?
On May 14th, 2014 - SOUND's headquarters facility was destroyed in the Carlsbad wildfires. Within hours, our technical services were online supporting our customers and in a period of less that two weeks, our business was relocated to a new facility returning to full business operations in less than 30 days. SOUND and the management team has received several awards and recognition from the Carlsbad Chamber and local business groups for it's resiliency and fortitude in response to the event. SOUND is humbled and very thankful for the outpouring support and assistance provided by the local community and businesses during the transition period..
Can you tell us about any new products or services your company is developing?
SOUND is on the cusp of completing a web based surgical planning tool for use with digital implant files and radiographs. In development, Sound collaborated with several leading surgeons to compile a simple, yet robust application for planning and client communication. We anticipate the release as an upgrade to the SmartDR product line in 2016. We will continue to offer and support the current OrthoPlan Elite offering as well as the web based application.
Visit the
SOUND website to learn more.
