Municipal Open Houses
Would you like to know more about how the programs and services offered by the Municipality impact you?  

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland will be holding open houses in all 12 municipal districts. The open houses will provide Council and municipal staff the opportunity to showcase many of the programs and services offered by the Municipality, as well as answer any questions from residents.
 
Open Houses for September are as follows:
  • September 15 - District 4, Saint Thomas Moore Church Hall, Pugwash;
  • September 17 - District 10, Diligent River Community Hall, Diligent River.
O pen houses will run from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Municipal Boundary Review
Update regarding Springhill transition

Following the dissolution of the former town of Springhill, two new districts were created in the Municipality to represent residents of Springhill. A by-election was held on May 23, 2015 which resulted in the election of the following councillors:
  • District 11 - Doug Williams
  • District 12 - Maryanne Jackson.
July 28, 2015, the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board approved the number of polling districts in the Municipality to be set at 12, each electing one councillor. The NSUARB has also approved the proposed changes to the polling district boundaries.

Generating Geothermal Power
Cumberland Energy Authority research partnershi p

The Cumberland Energy Authority is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy & the Environment at Cape Breton University. The aim of this partnership is to research for the potential commercialization of the geothermal resource with the hopes of economic development in the Springhill area. The new partnership will oversee the Phase 1 Geothermal Study in hopes of better understanding the geothermal resource potential within the former Springhill mines.  Learn More
Pugwash Water Infrastructure Project
Funding clean water project for Village of Pugwash

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland and provincial and federal officials announced a $14.9 million project that will bring clean water to the Village of Pugwash.  The project involves building a centralized water treatment plant as well as an associated reservoir and distribution system to the Village.  Learn More
Springhill Community Centre Infrastructure Improvements
Improvements to attract larger, more diverse events

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland received $50,000 from ACOA's Innovative Community Fund on July 30, 2015.  Facility improvements include installing a sound system throughout the building, constructing an entertainment stage and upgrading seating in the Common Room, and purchasing portable conference tables.  For more information about the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre visit our website
Governance Decision - Town of Parrsboro

September Council Session
September 2 and 16

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland Council will meet on September 2 and 16 at the Upper Nappan Service Centre. Both sessions will begin at 2:00 p.m. Please visit our website for more information about Council. 
Building & Development Permits
 
Building inspection services help to protect public health and safety by ensuring that buildings are designed and constructed in accordance with current building codes and regulations.
 
Why do I need a permit?
Permits are required in order to construct, move or demolish a structure. Changing the use of a building or area of land may also require permits. The best way to determine if your project requires a permit is by calling the Inspection line at (902) 667-1142. Our friendly staff is here to assist you.
 
Where do I apply for my permit?
You can apply for a permit by downloading our Building and Development Permit Application Form. This form also includes the application form for demolition permits. Or you can apply for your permit by visiting our Upper Nappan or Springhill Service Centres.  Learn More

Grant and product donations categories

GRASSROOTS PRODUCT DONATIONS
Enables conservation/access groups to raise funds or reward volunteers through product donations or gift cards. 
Applications are accepted anytime and take up to 6 weeks to process.

ACCESS AND ACTIVITY
Supports initiatives and infrastructure projects that inspire and enable people to be active outdoors through product donations and funding.
Application deadline: September 10, 2015 (midnight Pacific Time).

ADVOCACY AND AWARENESS
Supports important conservation campaigns and initiatives through funding.
Application deadline: September 10, 2015 (midnight Pacific Time).

CAPACITY BUILDING
Strengthens the effectiveness of conservation and outdoor activity organizations through funding. 
Application deadline: September 10, 2015 (midnight Pacific Time).

LAND ACQUISITION 
Funding helps to conserve ecologically and/or recreationally significant landscapes.
Application deadline: September 10, 2015 (midnight Pacific Time).

EXPEDITION SUPPORT
Supports expeditions that are exploratory in nature, unique in approach, geographically remote, and/or technically difficult through product donations and funding.
Application deadline: October 1, 2015 (midnight Pacific Time) and takes up to 6 weeks to process.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart - The Big Play

Hockey brings Canadians together. Our national pastime teaches teamwork, self-confidence and keeps us active. Sadly, many kids are missing out on all the benefits of hockey because they can't afford to participate. So, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and the Hockey Canada Foundation are committing to get 30,000 kids in the game over the next three years. Together, we will give more children the chance to play. 

The Big Play provides funding of up to $500/per child, subject to Jumpstart's other funding maximums and/or local demands and applications will be approved on a first come, first served basis.

KidSport

KidSport assists children by overcoming several financial barriers which prevent of limit their participation in organized sports. KidSport helps to put these children on an equal playing field with their peers, giving them self-confidence to be-come leaders of tomorrow. KidSport will provide funding of up to $300 per year per child towards sports/ recreation fees and/or for equipment.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart

There is a growing need in our communities to make physical activity a priority in the lives of Canadian children. Canadian Tire is committed to providing Canadian children with the opportunity to participate in sports and recreation so they can develop essential life skills, self-esteem and confidence. To help make this happen, Canadian Tire Jump-start will deliver assistance to give kids a sporting chance. Jumpstart will provide funding of up to $300 per year per child towards sports/ recreation fees and/or for equipment.

Aviva Community Fund Competition

This year the Aviva Community Fund provides $1,000,000 to put your ideas for positive change into action. Share your ideas with us, and we'll let Canadians decide which ideas get funded.
 
To be eligible for the competition your idea must create a positive change in your community. It must also meet the eligibility criteria within at least 1 of 3 category definitions listed below. Categories include:
  • Community Resilience - (Environment, Climate, Disaster Relief and Prevention);
  • Community Health - (Health, Sport, Active Living and Play);
  • Community Development - (Education, Skills Training, Culture, and Basic Needs).
Enter your idea from September 15 to October 2, 2015. There are three categories you can enter into and two funding levels to choose from.
