CENTENNIAL HIGH SCHOOL PTSA'S ONLINE NEWSLETTER
Microsoft Surface 3 Coming to Centennial!!

Last year, Centennial stepped into the forefront of 21 st century personalized learning when Fulton County Schools selected CHS to be in the first cohort of schools in the system to receive a personal device (Ipad, notebook, or laptop) for each teacher and student.  To be selected, Centennial completed a process to ensure that the staff was ready for additional professional development needed to not only efficiently deliver the devices, but also to effectively transform their instructional practices into personalized and blended instruction to fully utilize these devices.
After months of careful planning and research, guided by education and technology consultants plus the FCS technology department, our Personalized Learning Implementation (PLIP) Team, comprised of teachers, administrators, and students, finalized the instructional model and communication plans. CHS then began the process of selecting which device would best suit the needs of our students and teachers.
This month the Team made a unanimous decision that the Surface 3 would be the best device for Centennial.  The Surface 3 offers a tablet, a notebook, and a surface for writing and drawing with a stylus. Our plans are for teachers to receive their Surface 3 notebooks this semester to begin orientation and planning.  The students will then receive their notebooks next semester.
The 21 st century learning at Centennial is moving ahead at full steam. Go Knights!

Centennial Athletics
Volleyball

At the Region Tournament, three Centennial Volleyball players received some high honors. Senior  Mikaela Weidmann brought home Offensive Player of the Year and 1 st  Team All Region for her second straight year. Senior Jessica Diaz brought home 2 nd  Team All Region for her second year in a row. Freshman Olivia Diaz brought home Rookie of the Year and 2 nd  Team All Region. This is a tremendous honor to these three ladies for their hard work and dedication to the sport. (Attached photo of the girls. left is Jessica, middle is Mikaela, right is Olivia)

Mikaela Weidmann was also recognized by Esmark All-American Athletes. Esmark All-American is a program that recognizes players' commitment to the sport on and off the field. Players are chosen nationwide from the 16 major sports and only the top get chosen with distinction into the Esmark All-American Athletics group.

Centennial Volleyball ends the season with a 30 - 17 record. The team fought hard this year and is only graduating 3 seniors, so we are looking forward to next year when we hopefully will bring home a state berth.

Football
Centennial Knights Football Enjoying an Exciting Year

As many of you are aware, Centennial took on a new head football coach in February of this year.   There has been a lot of hard work and dedication throughout the year as the team prepped for the 2015 football season.  What you may not be aware of is that for the first time in Centennial Football history, the Knights qualified for the National Select 7 on 7 Tournament in Hoover, Alabama in July.  This event is by invitation only, through qualifiers held across the country, and is an opportunity to showcase team and individual talent.  With a 25 man roster, Centennial was one of 32 teams across the country to participate and finished in the top 16.
Coming into the regular season, the Knights were slower to start, but have now caught fire and are on a 4 game win streak.   Last week's battle against rival Alpharetta was a critical game as Centennial and Alpharetta came into the game in a 4 way tie in the region along with 2 other teams.  Through tremendous individual and team effort, Centennial came out on top, winning 38-35.    The Knights also celebrated Homecoming on 10/16 at The Fortress with a win against Habersham Central.  With only 3 games left in the regular season, The Knights continue to focus on winning.
The Knights Football organization appreciates all of the support from the school, the parents and the community so far this year.  We hope that everyone will continue to share in the excitement and come out to support the team.    The last home game of the regular season is October 23 at The Fortress and it is also Senior Night.
It's a Great Day to be a Knight!
Basketball - Boys and Girls
Tryouts for both girls and boys basketball will be held on Monday, Oct. 26th and Tuesday, Oct. 27th.  Please see 2015 Basketball Season Flyer for specific details.  Athletes must have an updated physical in order to participate.  The necessary physical forms can be found under "Knights HQ" -  "Athletic Forms".  Player fees will be $500 this year.  All teams will participate in fundraisers as the season progresses.  More information will be given once the teams are selected.

Coming Soon: College Week 2015!

During the week of October 24-31, Centennial will be hosting our 5 th  Annual College Week. The goal of our College Week is to further promote the college going culture in our school by offering students opportunities to learn more about all aspects of post-secondary education. Here is what you need to know about this year's College Week:

Myth : College week is not only for seniors.
Fact:  Some events will be more geared for students in a particular grade, but nearly all activities and events are open to students/parents in all grades.

Myth : College Week is only for students who are planning to attend a 4 year college/university.
Fact : College Week is designed to reach ALL students by exposing them to a variety of post-secondary possibilities and engaging them to be actively thinking about their future.

Myth : College week is only for students.
Fact : Several College Week events are open to both students and parents.

Over the course of the week we will be having several breakout sessions, activities and events which are all related to students and parents planning for continued education beyond high school. To preview the events and activities which we are planning for the week, visit the 2015 College Week Sneak Peak of Events More information about the final schedule of events along with more details on each individual session/event topic will be coming soon.

How do students participate?
  • Students can sign up for any Breakout Session in the counseling office starting Wednesday 10/21 and up through Friday 10/30.
  • When students sign up, students will receive a pass for the session(s) they sign up for
  • Some events will have a limited number of seats due to space; students should sign up early so they are able to reserve their spot before all seats are filled.
  • Some breakout sessions will only be offered once, others are being offered a few times on the same day.
  • Field Trips are for Juniors and Seniors only (Seniors will be given priority)
Can parents participate?
  • Yes! Parents are welcome and encouraged to come attend any of the breakout sessions during the week.
  • Some events are specifically intended for parents.
We strongly encourage students and parents to take advantage of these great workshops and information sessions. We want students to gain exposure to new possibilities, gain knowledge which will help them identify the best post-secondary fit for them and to be actively engaged in thinking about their future.

SADD club presents Red Ribbon Week     November 2 - 6, 2015
SADD club members have been working hard to plan a week of events to promote Red Ribbon Week and our intolerance for drugs.
Red Ribbon week began in the late 1980s to honor DEA Special Agent Enrique S. Camarena, who was close to unlocking a multi-billion dollar drug pipeline when he was kidnapped at gun point.  His mutilated body was discovered about a month later. His family and friends began wearing red ribbons to honor Camarena and his dedication to the war on drugs.
SADD members have been organized into committees to prepare activities during the week; including a Drug Free Pledge, Red Out, and Crazy Sock Day.  Some students will receive prizes for participation and recognition for being drug free.  Our week will conclude with a balloon launch during lunch periods on Friday, 11/6/15.
SADD club has been working closely with our PTSA representatives and we feel confident that the week will be a great success in promoting drug free living.
LEO Club
What do you call an ambulance with 1500 teddy bears inside?  Stuffed!
Members of the CHS LEO Club (a new organization at CHS affiliated with the Roswell Lions Club) have set a goal to collect 1500 "gently used" stuffed animals to be donated to Rural/Metro Ambulance Services.  The stuffed animals play an important role in helping scared children during an emergency when they or a loved one needs medical assistance.  Simply encouraging a child to hug the stuffed animal helps the child relax, allowing the medical crew to more easily assess the child for any medical needs while helping to ease their fears.
Donations can be made outside the AP office until November 16.

*Centennial's yearbook instagram page is centennial.yearbook. Students can post pictures with the hashtag #chsphotochallenge with the hopes of being featured in the yearbook.

*Our facebook page (Centennial Yearbook) will hold other important information while also highlighting our other social media pages.

Centennial School Governance Council
Seed Fund Proposal
Centennial is committed to continuing on with our theme of creating 21st Century Learning Spaces at our school.  Year 1 of our School Governance Council (SGC) brought us the Learning Commons.  Year 2 brought us our 2 Co-Labs - one with a Humanities focus and the other for STEM.  This year, we are submitting our Seed Fund Proposal for a Makerspace. This "makerspace" will allow students to engage with authentic and highly-individualized educational opportunities using cutting edge tools, both digital and analog, to accomplish class and personal projects. We will call our makerspace the "S.P.a.C.E." which will support our emerging school culture of "Shared Personalized and Creative Experiences."

Students will be able to push their skills beyond the traditional classroom. The space will be divided into areas of "creation" and "expression." The creation area will include:  electrical/mechanical/computer engineering equipment, fabrication machines, e.g. 3D printer, GlowForge laser etching and milling machine, sewing and embroidering machine, and desktop CNC mill. The expression area will include:  publishing, video-editing, animation, art and creative writing opportunities.  The SPaCE will be housed in a couple of unrenovated rooms located in the Learning Commons.

The Initial Application for the Seed Fund Grant was submitted on October 19.  If this passes some vetting processes, the Final Application will be submitted in December.  Awards are made in February.

We Have a New Counselor!
Her name is Heidi Graver and she works with people whose last names are Gom - Mart.  Welcome Ms. Graver!

PTSA New Parent Meeting - Nov. 5   8:30 AM in the Counseling Office
On September 3, the PTSA sponsored the first of four meetings that will be held this year for new parents.    Principal Crumbley joined us for coffee and conversation about different aspects of joining the CHS community. T he Counseling Department has been providing valuable support for these meetings.  Meetings like these are great opportunities for new parents to not only learn concrete information but also to learn about the culture and expectations of their new "village".   Please spread the word to any new Centennial families that the next New Parent Meeting will be held at 8:30 am on November 5 in Counseling Office.

The newly rebuilt Esther Jackson Elementary School also will open on its original Martin Road site with a new student body.

Students received their devices early October.
  • Do you know that the Centennial Cluster principals, SGC chairs and PTA Presidents meet together on a quarterly basis to work on cluster wide initiatives?  This is the only cluster in Fulton County schools that does this.  We even have a Centennial Cluster mission:
The Centennial PK-12 schools are an aligned 21st Century learning community providing a high-quality, innovative educational experience for all students to be college or career ready.

Remember to Use your Publix Scan Cards!

Do you know that the CHS PTSA has received over $14,000 from Publix over the years?!  That is a lot of money - and it takes no effort at all.  Just use your scan card every time that you make a purchase at Publix.  If you do not have a scan card, you can get one at the front desk.  They are available throughout the school year.  You or your student can pick up extra cards for grandparents, friends and neighbors to use.  Everyone buys groceries, and having these cards scanned when you shop at Publix is an easy way to help CHS PTSA!

Connect your Target Card to Centennial!
Make sure that you link Centennial to your Target Credit Cards.  Last year, Centennial received $1279.37 from Target!
Target REDCard sends 1% of purchases to our school and saves you 5% at Target stores every time you shop - another win-win!
