Brooklyn Generation School Mock Welcomes NYC Deputy Chancellor
 
Brooklyn Generation School welcomed  Phil Weinberg, NYC's Deputy Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, and his colleague, Sarah Johnson, to observe and engage with teachers on the third day of this year's Summer Institute. 
 
The Summer Institute provides teachers an opportunity to start the school year together, to welcome new colleagues, reflect on the past year and work on the priorities for the coming year.  This year, one of the focii of the Summer Institute is to establish the practice of observing in classrooms in order to develop a much deeper understanding of the school's instructional philosophy and the high leverage learning and teaching practices that make the philosophy come alive in the classroom.
 
Deputy Chancellor Weinberg appreciated the staff he observed and spoke to. He commented that they were honest, thoughtful and felt supported.  He commented on the clear strength of the relationship between the teachers and between the teachers and administrators and the power of these relationships to continue to improve practice and the outcomes for students.

GSN Teams Up with the Morgridge Family Foundation to Bring Share Fair Nation to Rural Colorado

Share Fair Nation (SFN) is a Morgridge Family Foundation (MFF)
sponsored event that provides a venue for PreK-12 educators to join the conversation around inspired teaching and learning, to collaborate and share best practices, discover emergent strategies and technologies, and see firsthand valuable and innovative approaches to delivering 21st Century learning.

Generation Schools Network Summer Interns Create Tools for Volunteer Engagement and Social Emotional Learning
This summer, GSN had the opportunity to host 2 interns - Katlyn Alapati (left with Sr. Director of Whole Student Development, Mary Cipollone, and Sr. Associate for Partnerships and Community Engagement, Leslie Tjajadi), a sophomore at Stanford University, and Roni Lubofsky (below right), a freshman at the University of Chicago. The interns worked with our Whole Student Development team on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, volunteer engagement and AmeriCorp VISTA preparation.
 
Roni provided GSN with an overview of her summer work before returning to Chicago:

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to work with GSN as the Volunteer Engagement intern. My primary responsibility was helping to prepare for the AmeriCorps VISTAs that are starting with the organization this fall, helping to screen applicants as well as build a Volunteer Engagement toolkit for the VISTAs to use. I utilized different resources including VolunteerMatch.org's latest book on volunteer engagement and worked with Mary and Leslie to build the A.C.E. (Attract, Collaborate, Engage) method for volunteer engagement, and I brought in my graphic design experience to tie this new method in with other existing documents. 
 
I have always been passionate for social justice, but have in the past mostly focused on direct service. Working with GSN gave me the opportunity to understand what goes on behind the scenes in an organization while also working to help a cause I care about - education. I gained many new skills while also being allowed to use my graphic design skills. I am so grateful to have been able to spend my summer here, and I look forward to working with GSN moving forward as a contract Graphic Designer.
 
Katlyn Alapati's work encompassed creating and editing lesson plans that will be used to help prepare high school students for their transition to college and a career. Katlyn drew upon her recent experience of making that transition herself and produced very relevant and engaging lesson plans that will be of great use to teachers that GSN partners with.   
 
GSN would like to thanks these women for their hard work providing essential tools to further quality education!


Generation Schools Network is hiring for AmeriCorps VISTA positions 

Generation Schools Network is looking for inspired individuals to fill 8 AmeriCorps VISTA positions and 1 AmeriCorps VISTA Leader position in Colorado: Denver, Pagosa Springs, Bayfield, La Junta, and Pueblo, and in Ohio: Cincinnati. GSN seeks qualified and motivated individuals to work with a partner school or district office to develop tools and procedures specifically in the areas of parent engagement, volunteer management, community partnerships, and social media communication. Area of focus depends on site.
